Vet visits important during Summer

DETROIT -

It's that time of year we all look forward to lazy, hazy summer days, no school, longer family vacations and a usually slower pace.?? But when it comes to our pets, there's one thing we shouldn't take a break from.

No one likes going to the doctor, but during the summer months, it's important to make sure the family dog or cat doesn't miss their trips to the vet.

Dr. Nicole McAlpine says, "Keeping those regular exams, even for things like routine blood work, are important because they also help pet owners, their animals and the veterinarian build a strong relationship."

Regular visits also help your vet catch problems in the early stages.? Kittens and puppies should see the vet at least two or three times a year.? For adult dogs and cats, once a year is probably okay.? For older animals, it's best to check with your vet.

A lot of people will travel with their pets during the summer.? Dr. McAlpine says, "It's best to get a check-up before going on vacation."

The price of your soul?

You know the story of Faust, of the scholar dissatisfied with his life. So of course instead of trying to find a way to improve his life, he takes a darker, but simpler path making a deal with the Devil. Now many see this legend as a complete, well lengend. Yet what if there were creatures of such being? What price would you put on your own soul in exchange for a servant literally not of this world?

So I have many spots open for my thread, which is a remake of one my older ones. Only this time there will be a fee plot changes and it will be set in Victorian England.

Don't feel like reading? Skip down to my Thread in a Nutshell at the bottom.

Year:1860

In the city of Oakpoint some of the top companies in the world making their headquarters here, adding the wealthy and influential families to the top of the social food chain. While powerful in the standards of the today's society, there is one other thing that causes others to fear these families...the heirs having no souls, using them as a seal of a contract with beings not of the living and good.

A faint glow came from the stately mansion that seemed to be bathed in sights of material wealth. Here and there a few fountains playfully splashed in the courtyard, which were constant receiving lcoaches in all colors from classic black to even out of place bright pink. The occupant of the pink carriage was the young heiress to a chocolate factory in Sweden. The men waiting outside the door had a faint smile on their lips as the small child was led into the gala by a firm hand of her governess. As yet another black lcoach pulled up, the younger servant rushed forward to open the door, only to be stopped by a hand grabbing his wrist. The servant was about to protest such rough treatment, that was until he saw the owner of the hand. His face paled visibly, as he choked out a small apology before quickly returning to where his coworkers were.

The man smirked slightly as he opened a gloved hand to the door of the lcoach, with his free hand her offered it to the passenger. There was the sound of a small laugh as a pale hand was laid in the man's palm and amused voice said "Now, now Vincent play nice with the toys". Vincent's smirk turned into a blank mask as he nodded and said "Yes Miss". Outfitted in a black and white suit if seen without the young lady one would presume this man was a partygoer as well, were it not for the small earring in his left ear shaped like a dragon. To any normal person it would have just been a piece of jewelry, to those with the knowledge it was the sign of a Mark.

A small collective gasp from the men as the young woman stepped out onto the concrete. Fashionably dressed in a pale silver dress that flowed down her body, her feet covered in black flats. Her driver smiled slightly as he led her up the stairs and said "Well aren't you glad you chose not to wear those ankle-breaking heels, considering by now you have fallen flat on her your face." The young woman blushed at his comment and said in a low growl "are you trying to insult me Vincent?? Vincent smirked as he said "Not at all Miss Anna, just stating as a concerned employee." His hand gently brushed against her bareback as lead her to her seat, to all the others in room it was just a servant doing his duty, but Anna Mary Wilson, heiress to the Wilson Corporation known for their shrewd lawyers, cut-throat ways in court. It was a reminder of their contract, signed in blood and with her soul. For Vincent was in guise as a human, while in reality he was one thing that go bump in the night, soul eating Ferins.

As the night wore on, a dutiful Anna danced with various suitors, her dying grandfather's final request that the family line continued as soon as possible. His words rang through her mind as he gave her the other part of her inheritance, which currently was watching her from the sidelines of the floor. His blue iris caught her pale brown ones, a smirk on his lips obviously taking advantage of watching Anna uncomfortably dance with men some decades older than she. As the orchestra's music faded out, Anna quickly took her hands out of the current leech and walked over to Vincent and hissing " You're being a..." Her rant was covered by Vincent's gloved hand as his stance straightened and eyes narrowed as if he saw something that Anna had not seen yet. The crowd parted as the orchestra struck up another song. Vincent withdrew his hand as he felt Anna?s teeth sink into his top finger, muttering ?Really now biting is so uncivilized?.

Anna glared at him, a voice behind them called out ?Well, well you are still a fiery little minx, the same as ever.? A large hand snaked around her waist as Anna politely said ?Thank you for your observance Mr.Rickens?it?s nice to see you again?. While she was saying this agilely moved out of his grasp thinking of the how she was going to have to burn the dress now. Mr.Rickens was on the members of her late grandfather?s business partners, at least twenty years her senior that did not stop him from trying to corner her every time she accompanied her grandfather. Mr.Rickens was a heavy and broad shouldered man at least a foot taller than Anna, with only about five inches taller than Vincent.

As seconds past, both Vincent and Mr.Rickens were glaring at one another, both for different reasons. Raspy gasps caused them both to look in front of them, the sight was rather pathetic. A young and gangly looking man was carrying a large briefcase possibly weighting more than the man himself, as he clumsily bowed to the woman. Mr.Rickens smirked at Vincent and clasped the man on the back and said ?This is my servant, Michel, my stupid brother struck a deal with him by accident. I kindly took him off his hands. Hell he may not be a great bodyguard, but he sure as hell is a good pack mule.? Mr. Ricken?s booming laughter rang out once more as the man Michel let out a small laugh weakly. Vincent felt a tinge a pity for the man, not at all capable of choosing a physically capable human shape.

Running a hand through his pale black hair Vincent asked ?Excuse me sir, but I am rather curious as of why your having your servant carry such a large briefcase?.
Mr.Rickens glared at Vincent and said ?I am glad you asked, cat. You see I am here to make a deal with your employer?.
Anna placed a hand on Vincent*s shoulder as she noticed a shutter of anger run through him at Rickens?s term. In a calm voice she said ?Well I suppose I should listen to what you have to say Mr.Rickens?.

Ace up her Sleeve

Gesturing for the pair to follow her, Anna began walking toward one empty room of the mansion with Vincent right on her heels, whispering ?I have a bad feeling about this Miss?. Anna nodded in agreement, as she walked into the nearest room with the door ajar. The room itself was like a parlor with a pair of overstuffed chairs and a loveseat, completed with a large fireplace; Vincent stepped in and turned on a light, the fireplace tools glinted in the light menacingly. Mr. Rickens gently grasped Anna?s hand as he lead her over to the loveseat, Anna forced to comply sat down in the corner of it, as far from Mr.Rickens as possible. In a clear and impatient voice she asked ?Well what is you want Rickens?? A cold smile appeared on Rickens?s face as said calmly ?You?. The room was suddenly filled with pitch black smoke, which seemed to wrap around the room like wrapping paper.

A small scream pierced the silence as the smoke seemed to clear into a small mist, allowing the occupants to see one another, yet to anyone on the outside it would just seem like a pure black room, void of life. There was another muffled scream followed by the sound a slap accompanying a voice ?Try that again, you stupid girl and your corpse is going to be found here dead by alcohol poisoning just like your scum of a father?. Vincent rubbed his eyes once more, as his vision became clear once more. Clenching his hands tightly as he smirked at Michel ?Why the hell I am I not surprised of course a Ferin as weak as you would have such a dirty talent.? A cold laugh filled the room as Michel stepped through the mist, his appearance now greatly altered. Although still lanky in appearance, his eye color had changed to a coal black in contrast to his grey skin, his teeth seemed to be like those of an enlarged rat, expect for the teeth were tipped like those of crocodile. The watch around his wrist is seemed to glow slightly as the mist seemed to recede.

Vincent stepped forward as the appearance of Rickens?s one hand holding a knife to the Anna?s throat, the other on her thigh. Ricken?s was casually sitting on the loveseat; Anna?s facing forward on his lap. In a professional voice he said ?Now cat, lets not try anything hasty, I would hate to disfigure such a pretty face?. Vincent came to a halt, with a nod toward Anna, who seemed to be oddly calm despite her current position, her voice betrayed her fa?ade as she snarled at Rickens ?If you do not release this instant, I am going to let Vincent go to town and rip you from limb to bloody limb" Ricken?s just chuckled as he tenderly said ?Now my sweet, you really aren?t holding the ace in this card game, so shut up and be a good girl?. His hand with knife gently pressed against her throat, slightly drawing blood. Vincent once again stepped forward with a hiss ?Miss!? .

Once again he was stopped, not by a command more like being shot in the chest by Michel who had retrieved a pistol from the briefcase. Blood spilled onto the floor as the wound wept freely, Vincent smirked at Michel and said ?Stupid kid, you seriously think a little toy would stop me?? Michel once again fired; the bullet missing its target, Michel?s hand was shaking with fear as he felt repressed memories appear out of the blue. Vincent*s talent was already unraveling the boy?s worst memories.

Vincent now leaned against the fireplace mantel, grasping the iron fireplace poker with a well practiced hand and said ?Well it?s not a rapier, but it will have to do?. Michel let out a scream of anguish, as he fell to to his knees with tears rolling down his cheeks. Rickens roared at him ?What the hell is wrong with you! Shoot him, you fool!? His command went unheard as the sobs came from Michel. Vincent chuckled, squatting down in front of the young Fenir speaking in a cheerful voice ?You poor little rat, how does it feel seeing your human memories come back and haunt you"

Vincent glanced at Anna who nodded and said ?Try not to get blood on that suit; you know how hard it is to get out?. Vincent grinned as he let swung the iron across the boy?s face, the sound of bones breaking sounded like music to his ears. With bloodied cheeks and now broken nose, Michel let out a howl of pain as the iron smashed against his knees, breaking his legs. Rickens?s face paled slightly at the amount of damage the man was afflicting with just the iron.

As blood spatter coated the man, who had a wide grin on his face at the sound of the boy?s pleading as he broke each of his toes with top of the iron. A cool and calm voice broke him out of his trance ?Vincent, don?t play with a broken toy, just finish him now*. Vincent wiped his gore splattered face with a handkerchief, and said ?As you wish Miss?. Now wielding the iron like a blade, he drove the flat end of it through the man?s heart, utterly killing him. There was gasp of shock from Rickens?s as he stuttered ?It?s impossible to kill one of you! ?. Vincent tilted his head to the side as he said ?Not if your killer is one of your own kind?or an extremely talented human who knows our secret weak points?. Anna had a small smile on her face as she said ?Well done Vincent, now do me a favor and get me. I am afraid my legs have fallen asleep.? With a nod he said ?Very well Miss, your wish is my command?.

As Vincent stepped closer to the pair, Rickens was now visibly shaking as he stuttered ?Now?Anna?I was an old friend of your grandfather?s surely he would not want you to kill me?. Anna smiled slightly as she grabbed the knife from the man?s weak grip; standing up from his lap she said ?No I won't kill you?? A brief grin from Ricken?s face was quickly replaced by a sheet of pain as she drove the knife through his hand that was once on her thigh.

Parting is such Sweet Sorrow

Blood flooded through the wound as Anna straightened her dress and said to Vincent ?Try and make his death look convincing, I would prefer to stay of the public eye?. Vincent nodded and said ?Yes Miss, how death by suicide sound?? Anna let out a small laugh and said ?You know me too well, Vincent, take care of the servant?s body once you?re done. Now you have five minutes with dear soon to be departed Mr.Rickens?. The mist had cleared as she stepped out of the room, her appearance perfect as a picture; a grin on her face as she knew soon she would hear the final breaths of Mr.Rickens.

The room seemed grow gradually darker as Vincent cracked his neck as if getting ready for a fight. Rickens now understood the true nature of these creatures that thrived on the emotions of humans, despite the fact that some seemed utterly emotionless. This fact did not stop Rickens from groveling on the ground like a worm begging for him to spare his life. Vincent's feral grin just grew wider and wider as he shook his head at Ricken?s offers who was babbling ?How about women, money, power! Men?? Vincent let out a cold laugh as he leaned forward and said ?What I desire most, is to hear your screams as your worst memories go through your mind?I would find that most pleasing. So shall we begin?? Before Ricken?s could protest, his eyes were covered by a gloved hand, minutes seem to be pass as a small light grew brighter in the darkness.

When Rickens?s vision cleared the sight before him was one of hell.was like a meadow out of a horror movie, the grass was soaked with blood of pure black. Pressing a hand to his mouth to prevent himself from vomiting, as he saw the corpses of friends and family, Rickens let out a small sob as he saw the corpse of his beloved eight year old son. ?The poor child was so confused of why such a man would do this?.?

A cool and collected voice seemed to echo throughout the treeless plain. Rickens spun around and screamed ?Where are you! What the hell have you done to my son! Where am I?? His questions were answered by a roar of laughter as Vincent appeared sitting on the pile of corpses. His nails were elongated and curved like those of a cat, and his teeth seemed to be pointed. His eyes were a bright silver color and his skin the same pale white color. His clothes were now a tattered suit dyed red with bits of black appearing here and there. Putting a pair of silver frames on his face he withdrew a book from his pocket and spoke aloud ?Joshua Rickens, cause of death strangulation, Mary Rickens wife of Walter Rickens, cause of death bled out from stomach wound.?

Walter Rickens was no longer a proper company partner; no not in Vincent*s world?he was just another toy to break. ?Who did this!!?, when all Walter?s received was a smirk and let out a roar of rage and charged toward the man, stumbling upon the bones. Vincent let out a sigh and said ?Why must my toys always fight me? Well I am afraid I must end our game now*. The bones suddenly shifted into a gallows, causing Rickens to gasp in surprise as a rope of blood appeared around his neck. Vincent strolled in front of his leisurely like one would at a zoo, and said ?Well you wanted to know who murdered your family. Before you die?? Walter was about to say yes, yet all that came out was strangled gasp as the rope tightened around his throat. Vincent leaned forward his face inches from the man as he said softly ?You?. A single tear fell down Walter Ricken?s face as the sound of the floor breaking filled the air. Vincent just smirked at hanged man and snapped his fingers. A rush of darkness filled the plain; the only sound was the faint noise of a child weeping.

As the room cleared, Vincent once again back in his human form smiled to himself, as he glanced upward. The body of Walter Rickens stared down at him with his face blue and tongue bloodied from the teeth stuck in them. Withdrawing his little black book and a pen he muttered as he wrote ?Walter Rickens cause of death hanged ?As he glanced at the parlor room, wondering how the man had gotten close enough to hang himself with his tie. A small ?ah? came from him he looked the mantle low enough for a person to climb on and reach the fan. The media would speculate the death as a suicide, in a way that was true Vincent was just shepherd of the death.

As he stepped outside the room, noticing Anna and stated ?The deed is done miss.? Can I go anything else?? Anna smirked and said ?Yes, drive me home, the events of today had wearied me greatly?. Vincent gave her a small smile and said ?Very good Miss, might I suggest we take the back way out, I think your appearance would alarm the others?. Anna nodded and said ?Very well?, her bare back to him was filled with a large dragoon tattoo that seemed to be moving as Vincent stared it. It was his Mark on her, just as his earring was her Mark. While it was not the greatest life to be stuck in this fleshy body, it did have its perks more toys for him to play. While he may be Marked no one was safe from being his puppet. Miss Anna would be an interesting toy?yet she would belong to eventually as her soul was his in time.

Tips in Finding a Good Brass Sheet Supplier | Industrial Mechanical

For welding and construction businesses, finding good providers of materials is important. This is because these materials will be the basis for the building?s sturdiness and longevity. Without quality materials, not only will the job be insufficient, it will also jeopardize the company?s reputation and relationship to the client. Likewise, low quality materials might also put the people who will be residing in the building in danger.

Look for a company who will provide the best materials. You will know that the provider is the best if they produce and supply high quality brass products. You can check their clients and these clients? satisfactory levels with the brass that they supplied to them. Their testimonials can be one of your bases in this area.

Also, consider the price of the material. Buying brass sheets in bulk will help you save money because of wholesale prices than buying in small quantities. However, you must check the sheets piece by piece so you would be assured that everything has been delivered in the right condition. Never sign invoices unless you are sure that you have checked everything and it has passed your quality control.

Furthermore, when you have shortlisted some brass sheet suppliers, check their background and reputation aside from asking from references. You can check the Better Business Bureau for background of the supplier. Never rely on their website or what they say because they will really speak accolades to their business.

Apart from the Better Business Bureau, ask people in the industry on their take on the service providers. They have an insight on which brass sheet suppliers should be trusted and which are nuisance. When you finally chose the right material provider, be sure that to establish rapport with them. This is very important in all business organizations so that you will have a good reputation and will continue to flourish in the industry.

Finding the right suppliers in all businesses is important. Especially in construction businesses where they are putting their company?s reputation in every project they make. Choosing the right brass supplier is not a hard task, but it will require time and effort from the business organization so as not to put their business in danger.

Businesses add fewer jobs than expected in May

U.S. private employers created 133,000 jobs in May, fewer than expected, a report by a payrolls processor showed on Thursday.

Economists surveyed by Reuters had forecast the ADP National Employment Report would show a gain of 148,000 jobs. April's figure was revised down slightly to an increase of 113,000 from the previously reported 119,000.

The report is jointly developed with Macroeconomic Advisers LLC.

"It's a little light, but I don't think anyone will be very surprised. Recent data hasn't been great, and while this isn't a horrible number, it shows we're in a lackluster period in the economy right now. Hopefully the recent negative trends will reverse themselves, but it is hard to see what will cause that," said Wayne Kaufman, chief market analyst at John Thomas Financial.

Paris plane crash spurs cultural growth in Atlanta

ATLANTA (AP) ? Fifty years ago, a group of 106 influential cultural and civic leaders from Atlanta traveled to Europe to visit famous museums and demonstrate the ascendant southern city's commitment to culture.

The Atlanta area's population in 1962 had recently hit a million people, but political and business leaders worried the growth wouldn't continue if the city didn't improve its museums and venues for theater and music. The city's cultural development would be altered forever by the trip, but in ways that had to do more with its tragic end.

The group was on its way home June 3 when its chartered Air France plane crashed on takeoff at Orly Field in Paris, killing all but two flight attendants. It had been the worst single plane crash to date.

"The community was just in shock," said Joe Bankoff, outgoing president and CEO of the Woodruff Arts Center in Atlanta. "I mean, to lose over 100 people in a moment was just unbelievable. But to lose such a cross section of Atlanta was particularly important."

On the flight were artists, company leaders, the first woman elected to the city's school board and other leaders. Among the sites on their packed agenda were the Louvre in Paris, the Coliseum in Rome and London Bridge.

Out of the city's grief grew a sense that something needed to be done to memorialize them, to improve on its tiny art museum in an old house and struggling art school.

"These people were heads of companies in Atlanta. They were the wives who did a lot of the volunteer work at the art association," said Susan Lowance, who had traveled with the group but had decided to stay in Europe longer to visit friends.

She believes the development of the arts center is a fitting tribute to her friends.

"These were people who had a stake in what was going to happen, and what happened was wonderful," Lowance said.

Atlanta is now home to a world-class art museum that has collaborated with the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Louvre, a Grammy-winning symphony orchestra and other top-notch cultural institutions.

Several business leaders led the efforts to create a permanent home for the arts. They wanted to honor the dead, but also shared the belief that to attract big business they needed to have big arts.

"It was about doing something that would put Atlanta on the map, and that vision was driven really by people who were not themselves passionate about the arts," said Bankoff, whose last day as head of the arts center was Thursday.

The idea was to create a single entity that would house all major art forms. It led to the establishment of Atlanta Arts Alliance and the Memorial Arts Center ? now named the Woodruff Arts Center, after former Coca-Cola president and major donor Robert Woodruff.

The groundbreaking for the Memorial Arts Center was held on June 3, 1966, the fourth anniversary of the crash. It took about two years to complete with a final price tag of more than $13 million, according to "Explosion At Orly," a book by historian Ann Abrams.

When the center opened in October 1968, the French ambassador to the United States presented to the city a casting of sculptor Auguste Rodin's "The Shade." Today it sits on the grounds of the High Museum of Art in a memorial ringed by polished stone etched with the names of those who died in the Orly crash.

The center has grown over the years to include the Richard Meier-designed High, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Alliance Theatre, the 14th Street Playhouse and the Atlanta College of Art.

Speculating on what the Atlanta arts footprint would look like today if the crash had never happened, both Abrams and Bankoff said they believe the city was destined to grow into a major arts center.

"Frankly, it would have happened anyway, but it might have taken a little longer, and it might have taken a few different turns," Abrams said.

The different artistic entities would likely have been scattered instead of winding up on a single campus in Midtown Atlanta, Bankoff said. The visual and performing arts were grouped under combined management, which may have accelerated their development and strength.

While Atlanta's profile in arts bloomed, the families of the crash victims put their lives back together.

Penny Hart was a 19-year-old college sophomore studying at the Sorbonne in Paris when her mother, Henrietta Collier Armstrong Ayer, came over on the trip. They ate dinner together the night before the crash.

"It was just a wonderful, happy occasion all the way around," Hart said.

Hart's stepfather booked her a flight to Atlanta the day after the crash. She stayed for several weeks and returned to Paris to finish her studies after her mother's funeral. After graduation, she abandoned her plans to go to graduate school for clinical psychology and decided she wanted to keep traveling. She became a flight attendant for Pan American World Airlines for several years.

"There was no one to stop me, and my mother would have stopped me. It just wouldn't have fit in with her image of things," Hart said. "I had a great deal of freedom, I guess. But it's also very strange to have no support if you need it."

She eventually returned to Atlanta. Her involvement in the memorial project was limited until decades later when she helped the center locate surviving relatives of the victims.

"Most of them were so thrilled to have been found because they hadn't had anybody to talk to about this very much and certainly not for a long time," she said. "In those days, you didn't wallow in your troubles publicly ever. You got right back up and dusted yourself off and got moving again."

Also killed were Tom Little Sr., an architect who restored 18th-century buildings, and his wife, Charlotte, who decorated the interiors with period furnishings. Their son, Tom, was 12 and was being cared for by an aunt while his parents were in Europe. He remembers watching cartoons in his parents' bedroom when the phone rang. He answered at the same time that his aunt picked up the extension in the kitchen and listened as another aunt sobbed that the plane had crashed.

Little remembers sharing stories with other family members of victims at the 40th anniversary of the crash. In his home, a photo of his parents taken just before they left for Europe sits on a shelf, and framed pencil drawings by his father hang on the walls. He said even he and his older sister had rarely spoken about the crash.

The Woodruff Arts Center and other organizations have planned events to mark the date, and Bankoff said the 50th anniversary provides "a moment to stop and reflect not just on the loss, but on 50 years of continuous support for arts and culture in the community as an important sign of what this community values."

"I'm glad that we have these anniversaries," Little said, "because I like to think that my parents' legacy will last forever."
