The Hardin-Simmons University Irvin School of Education announced the Student Teacher of the Year and awarded over $120,000 in scholarships, Monday, April 8, 2013, in a ceremony in HSU?s Johnson Building?s multipurpose room.
In a surprise announcement, Karl Wilcox, a senior math education major from Granbury, Texas, received the coveted Student Teacher Award. Wilcox has been student teaching in math this semester at Cooper High School.
Also receiving a surprise award was Sean Carlton, who will graduate from HSU in December. Carlton has been serving as the orchestra director at Madison Middle School in the Abilene Independent School District since last August. He received the Education Deans of Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas Educator Award.
The Irvin School also awarded almost $110,000 in education scholarships and over $11,000 in other scholarships for a total of $121,375 distributed to 69 worthy recipients to use during the 2013-2014 academic year.
About 200 parents, students, professors, and scholarship donors attended the awards ceremony. Students in the Irvin School of Education who receive the scholarships are planning to become teachers, counselors, psychologists, or will be pursuing degrees using physical education.

Karl Wilcox is the recipient of the W. B. Irvin Outstanding Student Teacher of the Year Education Award, established to assist teacher education graduates as they begin their teacher careers.
Completing his student teaching as a mathematics teacher at Cooper High School, supervising teacher, Scott Whitlock, says Karl?s time in the classroom produced well-done and effective results among the high school students. ?Karl?s diligent efforts create opportunities for student participation and allow him to incorporate a variety of teaching strategies. His industrious and meticulous efforts consistently produced well-done, complete, and effective results. Moreover, Karl is a personable, fun, and caring individual,? says Whitlock.
Karl has been a Holland Scholar since his second year, and will be awarded the Holland Mathematics Medal on April 17, 2013. Recently, Karl was awarded the Burnam Mathematics Award given to high achieving graduates in mathematics. Wilcox has worked in the Math Computer Lab for most of his HSU career with students coming in specifically asking for his help.
?Karl is one of the brightest, most diligent students I?ve had the pleasure of teaching,? writes Dr. Andrew Potter, professor of math and department head, for a citation that was read during the ceremony. ?Karl exhibits professionalism in the classroom and strong character outside the classroom as well,? says Dr. Jonathan Mitchell, HSU assistant professor of mathematics.
Dr. Renee Collins, associate professor of education and head of the Department of Educational Studies, serving as Wilcox? university supervisor, says, ?Karl demonstrated excellence in all areas of designing and implementing challenging, motivating and interactive math lessons. He consistently utilized opportunities for teachable moments, connected to past experiences, and made real-world connections during his lessons.?
Collins praises Wilcox for volunteering to arrive early and stay late at school to provide one-on-one tutoring for students needing the extra assistance to master mathematical concepts. She says, ?Karl modeled respect to all types of learners, encouraged the reluctant learners, and maintained a firm but fair attitude while monitoring students? participation during his lessons,? adding that he reflected a professional and genuine attitude while interacting with students and exhibited a calm, confident, and seasoned approach to teaching.

Sean Carlton was awarded the Educator of the Year Award given by the Education Deans of Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas.
Carlton has worked as an intern director of orchestra for Madison Middle School since the beginning of the school year. George McFarland, principal of Madison Middle School, praises Carlton saying he has been a tremendous asset to Madison.
?One of the innovative things Sean did this year was to have an orchestra lock-in: a first for our orchestra program,? says McFarland. ?With 90-plus students and only himself along with parent volunteers, I received only positive reports about Sean and how well-behaved his orchestra students were,? says McFarland. ?I am very involved in visiting Sean?s classes, and I always walk away knowing that I am blessed to have him working with our students. His demeanor and patience are well-suited to our young learners, yet he consistently moves them toward improvement.?
Carlton?s professors in the College of Fine Arts agree with McFarland?s assessment. ?Throughout the teacher preparation program he demonstrated a passion for learning and perfecting his teaching skills.?????????? Not only was he an excellent student in the studio and classroom, but Sean was also already doing a great job in developing his own teaching studio with middle and high school age students,? says Dr. Peter Isaacson, professor of orchestra at HSU. ?In my 11 years of college teaching, I have not seen anything like his achievement, and I think it truly is a credit to discipline, talent, and especially his keen intelligence. ?
Dr. Bob Brooks, dean of the College of Fine Arts, surmises, ?Sean has the heart of a teacher and the passion of an artist. This combination will serve him well as he pursues his career in music education. Colleagues and students will be blessed by his attention to detail and his diligence in the development of students in the classroom. It has been such a privilege to work with Sean.?
