Apple to Set up Chinese RandD Facility

Published on:

?Apple is reportedly looking at setting up an R&D facility in China as it seeks to boost its smartphone sales in the country. Apple's CEO Tim Cook is said to have discussed the plans with Beijing's mayor, Wang Anshun during his recent trip to the country.

Although Apple sells its products in the country, it has struggled to secure a deal with the country's dominant mobile network, China Mobile - partly due to technology issues but reputedly mainly due to commercial disagreements. Increasing R&D investments in the country may make it easier for the company to overcome the technology difficulties and localise more of its content for the Chinese consumer.

The company will also migrate its Chinese iTunes store to be hosted on local servers within the confines of the Chinese firewall to speed up download times for local consumers.
