Cancer victim Griggs Hampton was one of a kind

It was the spring of 1979 and I was sent to cover an event for the now-defunct Mount Airy Times by my editor in those days, R.J. Berrier.

This was on a Saturday morning, and the assignment included going to the downtown area for the auction of the Banner Building, a historic landmark there.

Of course, the gathering included prospective bidders and other people interested in the sale, but there was another fellow there who didn?t seem to fit in with the others. He was holding a container of golf balls, and eventually approached me to ask if I wanted to buy some.

I couldn?t really understand what he was saying, as he seemed to mumble his words, but the guy?s role as a salesman putting a move on his prospect was abundantly clear.

This seemed to be an odd gesture, especially by a person on the streets of downtown Mount Airy. But for some strange reason, I ended up purchasing a golf ball, which cost 50 cents if I remember correctly.

I say ?strange? because this was years before I decided to take up the sometimes-agonizing, sometimes-ecstatic sport. Later, it could have replaced one of the many balls I hit into the woods or the water, but at that time I had no real need for a dimpled white spheroid.

However, this unusual fellow just seemed so persistent that I think I bought one just to get him out of my hair. And after placing my four bits into his eager, outstretched hand, several people standing nearby chuckled knowingly at seeing another unsuspecting person being solicited by this intrepid golf-ball seller.

That was my first encounter with Griggs Hampton, with whom I would cross paths many times afterward until he died last week from brain cancer at age 62.

Selling golf balls was just one of the money-raising pastimes of Griggs, having scavenged them from a local course near his home. His primary function along those lines was to generate funds for charitable causes such as the American Cancer Society?s Relay for Life campaign and the March of Dimes.

He is credited with soliciting more than $100,000 in donations for those two charities alone. Griggs even collected in excess of $100 from medical personnel at a Winston-Salem hospital when he initially was treated there for his illness earlier this year.

Griggs often devised creative ways for raising money, such as a ?kiss the pig? gimmick in which donors could give on the basis of the person they?d most like to see engage in that dubious honor.

On many occasions over the years, Griggs was recognized as the top fund-raiser for the various causes he supported. And he could always be counted on to show up in the front lobby of The Mount Airy News to get his picture made in honor of that accomplishment.

Griggs truly loved his community, whether it involved cheering for Mount Airy Bears sports teams or attending meetings of the city commissioners. He was bound to show up most anywhere there was a crowd, hence his appearance at that long-ago auction downtown.

The really remarkable thing about Griggs was that he accomplished so much despite being what some people would consider handicapped. He suffered from cerebral palsy since birth, but still managed to graduate from Mount Airy High in 1969.

He really knew a lot about the Bears? sports history, and could recall details of games that occurred many years before.

When he first had surgery to remove a brain tumor, Griggs had difficultly understanding what was going on ? thinking a ?golf ball? simply was taken out during the procedure.

The question many of the rest of us now have was why this person who had done so much and would have continued to do more was taken from our midst.

I think the lesson to be learned from Griggs Hampton?s life was that he used it to the fullest in achieving good for others, regardless of whatever hand he had been dealt personally. He will live on as an example to everyone that a person doesn?t have to be mentally or physically perfect in order to make a difference in this world.

Griggs? funeral service was held on Wednesday, accompanied by a good turnout of citizens who came to say good-bye to an unforgettable character. His unyielding dedication to his community and faith was mentioned frequently during the service.

Had he been there, I?m sure Griggs would have been pleased ? and might have sold a golf ball or two.

Molecular mechanism links temperature with sex determination in some fish species

ScienceDaily (Dec. 29, 2011) ? A study led by the CSIC's Institute of Marine Sciences, in collaboration with researchers from the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG), has found the epigenetic mechanism that links temperature and gonadal sex in fish. High temperature increases DNA methylation of the gonadal aromatase promoter in female.

The environmental temperature has effects on sex determination. There are species, such as the Atlantic silverside fish, whose sex determination depends mainly on temperature. And there are other species whose sex determination is written within its DNA but still temperature can override this genetic 'instruction'.

Previous studies with the European sea bass, a fish whose sex determination depends on a combination of genetic and environmental factors, had shown that starting with a normal sex ratio population -equal proportions of male and females, it was possible to obtain an all-male group just through an increase in water temperature during a critical period of early development.

The most intriguing observation was that effects of temperature were maximum at a moment when gonads were not differentiated nor had they even started to form. Why was this happening, what makes temperature override the genetic component and so early was, until now, a long-standing puzzle.

Now, a research lead by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) has found out the answer. The team, lead by Francesc Piferrer, a CSIC professor at the Institute of Marine Sciences, in Barcelona, describes the mechanism which is induced by increased temperatures and triggers aromatase gene silencing.

Aromatase is an enzyme that transforms androgens into estrogens, which are essential for the development of ovaries in all non-mammalian vertebrates. If there is no aromatase there are no estrogens, and without estrogens the development of ovaries is not possible. The research, that has been realized with the contribution of the Center for Genomic Regulation, in Barcelona, is being published this week in PLos Genetics.

Early effects

In the experiment, scientists exposed two groups of European seabass larvae at different temperatures, normal and high temperature, during their first weeks of life.

Results show that high temperature increases the DNA methylation of the gonadal aromatase promoter (cyp19a), which, in turn drives its silencing as its transcriptional activation is inhibited. In the group exposed to high temperature there were genetic females that were only partially affected and yet developed as females. However, there were other genetic females with the highest level of DNA methylation that therefore developed as males because aromatase was fully inhibited.

This is the first time that an epigenetic mechanism linking an environmental factor to a cellular mechanism related to the sexual determination has been described in any animal. Previously, only a similar mechanism had been described in some plants.

As researcher Francesc Piferrer points out, 'animals are affected very soon, before differences between females and males become visible in histological samples, which happens on the 150th day of life, and even before the gonads start to form, which happens on the 35th day of life'.

This work explains why a few degrees of temperature rise masculinize these animals, something relevant in a context of global change.

It also explains why many fishes raised on farms are males, since farmers raise larvae in warmer waters in order to accelerate their growth. Piferrer adds that 'sex determination by temperature is very common in reptiles. It will be interesting to see if a similar mechanism to the one described exists in this group of vertebrates'.

Doh! Top Science Journal Retractions of 2011

News | More Science

Each year hundreds of peer-reviewed scientific articles are retracted. Most involve no blatant malfeasance; the authors themselves often detect errors and retract the paper. Some retractions, however, entail plagiarism, false authorship or cooked data

Image: City of Yuma, Arizona

Bad science papers can have lasting effects. Consider the 1998 paper in the journal The Lancet that linked autism to the MMR vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella. That paper was fully retracted in 2010 upon evidence that senior author Andrew Wakefield had manipulated data and breached several proper ethical codes of conduct.

Nevertheless the erroneous paper continues to undermine public confidence in vaccines. After the Lancet article, MMR vaccination rates dipped sharply and haven't fully rebounded. This decline in the MMR vaccine has been tied to a rise in measles cases resulting in permanent injury and death.

Each year hundreds of peer-reviewed scientific articles are retracted. Most involve no blatant malfeasance; the authors themselves often detect errors and retract the paper. Some retractions, however, as documented on the blog Retraction Watch, entail plagiarism, false authorship or cooked data.

No journal is safe from retractions, from the mighty "single-word-title" journals such as Nature, Science and Cell, to the myriad minor, esoteric ones.

Yet as astronomer Carl Sagan once said, "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." Below are five science results retracted in 2011, pulled permanently off the books in part for falling far short of meeting the Sagan standard.

#5: Los Angeles marijuana dispensaries lead to drop in crime.

Keep smoking. The RAND Corporation retracted its own report in October after realizing its sloppy data collection.

Crime data compiled from neighborhoods with these highly contentious medical marijuana dispensaries supposedly revealed slightly lower crime rates. The authors attributed this decline not to marijuana itself but rather the presence of security cameras and guards in and around the dispensaries, having a positive effect on the neighborhood. [The History of 8 Hallucinogens]

The L.A. city attorney's office was incensed with the report, having argued the opposite ? that the dispensaries breed crime. The city's lawyers soon found critical flaws in RAND's data collection, largely stemming from RAND's reliance on data from CrimeReports.com, which did not include data from the L.A. Police Department. RAND blamed itself for the error, not CrimeReports.com, which had made no claims of having a complete set of data, and, in fact, didn't even know about the study.

#4 -- Butterfly meets worm, falls in love, and has caterpillars.

The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) published a fantastic claim in 2009 by zoologist Donald Williamson, which was delightfully reported in the science news media. Williamson claimed that ancestors of modern butterflies mistakenly fertilized their eggs with sperm from velvet worms. The result was the necessity for the caterpillar stage of the butterfly life cycle.

The PNAS paper got a few laughs among evolutionary scientists, but it hasn't yet been retracted. Williamson's follow-up 2011 paper in the journal Symbiosis, however, has been retracted.

Researchers Michael Hart and Richard Grosberg at the University of Texas, Austin, systematically refuted all of Williamson's claims in the pages of PNAS by the end of 2009. They based their arguments entirely on well-known concepts of both basic evolution and the genetics of modern worms and butterflies. When Symbiosis published its butterfly-meets-worm article in January 2011, Hart raised questions with the editor. As of November the paper is no longer available.

Make a No-Sew Pet Bed [Pets]

Make a No-Sew Pet BedIf your pet needs a bed you can make one yourself even if you don't know how to sew. All you need to do this are a couple of yards of fabric, a bag of batting, scissors, and the ability to tie a square-knot.

Instructables user schoochmaroo figured out an easy way to make a pet bed without sewing by cutting fringes on the border of the top and bottom fabric pieces and tying the fringes together into square knots.

Full step-by-step instructions and photos are at the source link below, but what you're basically doing is cutting two pieces of fabric to the same rectangular shape, cutting identical fringes into each piece of fabric, and tying the upper and lower fringes together. When you're around ? finished with the knot tying you can start to fill the cavity of the bed with batting and finish tying. For those of you unfamiliar with crafting, batting is the filling for quilts and pillows made from cotton, polyester, or other materials. You can buy a bag for a few bucks at any craft store or online.

The project should take around a half hour to complete and cost less than ten bucks depending on the fabric and batton.

Well, now's likely the time to buy while it's low in hopes it goes up later on down the road. You might buy and lose some value in the coming months if it continues to go down but it's likely it'll go up again, sooner or later. That's why it's an investment, buy low, hope in the coming years or retirement years it's worth more than you bought in at. Click here to enlarge

Australia hit back against India

Brad Haddin Wicketkeeper Haddin reached 21 before the close at the MCG

Brad Haddin and Peter Siddle helped Australia recover on an even opening day of the Boxing Day Test against India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The pair shared an unbroken stand of 63 as the hosts closed on 277-6.

Earlier, debutant opener Ed Cowan (68) and Ricky Ponting (62) added 113 for the third wicket.

When Zaheer Khan removed Michael Clarke and Mike Hussey in successive balls, Australia slid from 205-3 to 214-6 but Haddin and Siddle steadied things.

The late intervention of the seventh-wicket pair gave Australia a parity that they will feel they deserve after two controversial moments at the MCG.

The touring Indians has refused to give consent to the use of the Decision Review System (DRS) during the four-Test series and twice the hosts suffered.

Both Cowan and Hussey were given out caught behind when they appeared to have made no contact with the ball.

For Tasmanian Cowan, who had survived the setback of seeing David Warner and Shaun Marsh fall to Umesh Yadav (3-96) in the opening session, it brought to an end the most successful display by an debuting Australian opener since Wayne Phillips' 159 against Pakistan 1983-84.

His stand with veteran Ponting, who unfurled three trademark pull shots off Zaheer and Yadav, dominated the afternoon session before Yadav tasted revenge by having the former captain caught at second slip.

The balance then swung in India's favour after tea when Zaheer (2-49) first trapped Clarke lbw and then, with the next ball, had under-pressure Hussey adjudged caught by Mahendra Dhoni when replays showed that the ball had missed the bat by some distance.

And when Cowan suffered similar misfortune off the bowling of Ravichandran Ashwin, Australia had lost three wickets for nine runs in 19 balls.

But Siddle (34 not out) and Haddin (21 not out) ensured there would be no further drama.

Santa tracker launches again with smart phone app, volunteers ready

Santa tracker has became a?tradition?for NORAD, which answers 80,000 calls on the whereabouts of Santa. There are several apps available for Apple and Android phones.

The volunteer?Santa?trackers?at the North American Aerospace Defense Command are bracing for tens of thousands of calls and emails when their operations center goes live on Christmas Eve.

The military base has been telling anxious children about?Santa's?whereabouts every year since 1955. That was the year a Colorado Springs newspaper ad invited kids to call?Santa?on a hotline, but the number had a mistake, and dozens of kids wound up talking to the Continental Aerospace Defense Command, NORAD's predecessor.

The officers on duty played along and began sharing reports on?Santa's?progress. It's now a deep-rooted tradition at NORAD, a joint U.S.-Canada command that monitors the North American skies and seas.

Last year,?NORAD?Tracks Santa volunteers answered 80,000 phone calls on?Christmas Eve, said Joyce Creech, project leader.

"It's just so precious to hear the little sigh or breathing on the other end, and you realize how nervous they are," Creech said.

"But we've had really heart-wrenching stories as well," she said. "'Can you ask Santa to heal my brother of cancer?' Or, 'Can I get a new pair of shoes? I don't have any.'"

NORAD's?Santa updates are just about everywhere ? on?Facebook,?Twitter,?YouTube, its?own website?and on television. And this year, there's a new Santa-tracking app for smart phones. The app was downloaded more than 234,000 times from?Android Market?and?iTunes?App Store by mid-December, Creech said.

The?NORAD?Tracks Santa website has had more than 2.2 million unique visitors this year.

But the rows of telephones in the operations center are still the heart of the operation. More than 1,200 volunteers answer calls in shifts, checking big-screen computer monitors indicating Santa's location and passing that along to children, many who seem dumbstruck.

Creech said the rising numbers are probably a reflection of how much people look forward to the season, and how much of a tradition calling?NORAD?has become for many families.

"You can tell that it really brings people joy, and especially kids," she said.

India tycoon's got tons of cash, nowhere to invest

(AP) ? Ajay Piramal is sitting on a mountain of cash. Yet the billionaire Indian tycoon, working in one of the world's fastest growing economies, is struggling to figure out what to do with the money.

The problem isn't opportunity, he said. It's India.

"Every large investment, there was no transparency," Piramal said.

His dilemma is a worrying sign for India. With the country mired in corruption, bureaucratic red tape and unclear and changing government policies, many of the men who made their billions here are saying maybe it's time to quit India. It's got to be easier to do business elsewhere.

In May last year, Piramal's healthcare business sold its generic drug operations to U.S. pharmaceutical giant Abbott Laboratories for $3.8 billion. Piramal, a tall big man in a country that still measures prosperity by girth, was eager to set that cash pile to work. He wanted to expand one of his chemical plants, but was told it would take five years.

"The same plant could be set up in China in two years," he said. "I love India, but my customer is not going to wait."

India, still a beacon of relatively fast growth despite a troubled world economy, should be a magnet for capital. Instead, since the beginning of 2010, the amount that Indians have invested in businesses overseas has exceeded the amount foreigners are investing in India, according to central bank figures.

In part this reflects the confidence and aptitude of India's maturing companies and the current malaise in the global economy and financial markets. But it also reflects deep problems at home. India's big coporations may be cash rich but the failure to invest that money domestically is bad news for a developing country that needs capital to build the roads, power plants and food warehouses that could help lift hundreds of millions out of dire poverty.

The frustration of India's business elite with corruption, political paralysis, log-jammed approvals, regulatory flip-flops, lack of access to natural resources and land acquisition battles ? to pick a few of the top complaints ? has reached a pitch perhaps not heard since India began liberalizing its economy in the early 1990s.

"If you are an honest businessman in India, it's very difficult to start up anything," said Jamshyd Godrej, chairman of manufacturing giant Godrej & Boyce. "Companies are going to operate where they see the best opportunities and efficiency for their capital."

Increasingly, that's outside India.

In 2008, foreigners poured roughly twice as much direct investment into India ? $33 billion ? as Indians plowed into businesses overseas. By 2010, that had reversed: Indians invested $40 billion abroad ? twice as much as foreigners invested in India ? a trend that's continued this year.

There is another, unspoken element to all the complaints. To the extent that business in India ran on corruption, some of the old, dirty ways of doing things are being disrupted, freezing India's already glacial bureaucracy, business leaders say.

Scandals in the staging of the Commonwealth Games, the pilfering of homes meant for war widows and the irregular auction of cellphone spectrum that cost the country billions has sent parliamentarians and even a Cabinet minister to prison.

With Indians tiring of the incessant graft, tens of thousands of middle-class protesters poured into the streets and pushed an anti-corruption bill onto the floor of Parliament.

Steelmakers can't get enough iron ore because a massive mining scandal in the southern state of Karnataka prompted a court to order the closure of illicit mines that account for a fifth of iron ore production in the country.

The bureaucrats ? even the honest ones ? are reportedly so scared of being punished they are refusing to make the decisions needed to make the country run.

Piramal is not unpatriotic. Each room in his executive suite is named after an Indian epic hero: Arjuna, the most pure; Dhananjay, acquirer and master of wealth. There's a quote from the Upanishads scriptures on the wall.

His office sits in a one million square foot office park in Mumbai his family built. The buildings around him ? white with blue glass that flashes back the unforgiving sun ? bear his own name in large black letters: Piramal Towers.

Piramal had the will and the means to build power plants and roads.

Instead, his Piramal Group's largest investment to date has been in one of the office park's tenants: the Indian subsidiary of the British telecom giant Vodafone Plc.

Last September, when he got the first payout, of $2.2 billion, from Abbott, the phone started ringing.

"Because people knew we had money, we had so many people approaching us for projects in the infrastructure sector," he said. "These people had no experience and no knowledge and no track record of having built a business in any area. And yet they were coming to us saying we have licenses and approvals. That just didn't sound right or smell right."

Each day, they paraded through his office: The investment banker who decided to build a 500 megawatt power plant, the coal trader assured of a government coal allocation, small-time miners with pretty presentations promising land, licenses and financing.

"They'd name politicians from the center and the state who had it all tied up for them," he said. "It didn't sound right. Obviously there were things going on in the system."

Road and port projects weren't much better, he said.

Piramal also looked at investing in engineering and infrastructure services companies, but couldn't make sense of their books.

"We couldn't find anything," he said. "People get greedy. In their desire to get good valuations they resort to, if I can say, creative accounting."

Today, India's infrastructure companies are known as great wealth destroyers.

"Infrastructure investment has become untouchable, a sure way of losing money," said Jagannadham Thunuguntla, head of research at SMC Global Securities. He calculates that four of India's top infrastructure companies ? GMR Infrastructure, GVK Power and Infrastructure, Lanco Infratech and Punj Lloyd ? have lost over 80 percent of their value since 2007. A fifth, Larson & Toubro is down 50 percent.

Piramal may have dodged a bullet, but shareholders in Piramal Healthcare aren't happy. Despite a $600 million special dividend and share buyback, the share price has sagged since the Abbott deal was announced on May 21 last year. They'd like to see the Abbott cash productively deployed. Instead, much of it is sitting in fixed deposit accounts.

Piramal said he really does want to run a pharmaceutical company and be the first Indian company to discover a world-class drug ? despite his dabbling in telecom, financial services and real estate financing. It's just that pharma can't absorb all his cash. He plans to sell the 5.5 percent stake he picked up in Vodafone Essar for $640 million in a few years, when Vodafone Essar issues shares in an initial public offering, he said.

He has also launched Piramal Capital, to make real estate and infrastructure loans, and spent about $50 million to acquire IndiaReit, a real estate investment company.

Meanwhile, his thoughts have turned to Boston, where he set up IndUS Growth Partners with a professor from Harvard Business School to look for buying opportunities in the U.S., in security, financial services and biotechnology. And he said he's still planning to spend over a billion dollars on biotechnology acquisitions in North America and Europe.

"India was going more towards capitalism than socialism," Piramal said. "I think we're going back. Capitalism went to too much excess. Corruption levels went to the extreme."

He said he'll announce his first overseas acquisition by March.

Carefully Controlled Air-Duct System Critical to Energy Efficiency

In this age of high-tech and instant everything, heated and cooled homes are something we often take for granted.

I, for one, expect to return to a comfortable home after a hard day's work, and I give little thought to the luxury of having a heating and cooling system that constantly adjusts to the outside weather without any effort on my part.

In fact, the HVAC equipment in a home is a complex design of mechanical equipment that keeps us comfortable no matter what the temperature is outside, and it is the ductwork of this system that transfers the conditioned air into our living space. The more efficiently ducts transfer air, the more effectively your home gets conditioned. Because ducts have such a significant role in HVAC efficiency, and because they represent a small fraction of the cost of the entire system, it is a good place to examine for repairs and upgrades.

Unconditioned places, such as the attics and crawlspaces where ducts are often located, create challenges for the effective transfer of conditioned air. According to information on a U.S. Department of Energy site (ducts.lbl.gov), about 25 percent of the energy (and therefore money for utilities) used for heating and cooling is typically wasted through duct system energy losses.

How do we lose efficiency through our ductwork, and how can we fix it? There are two main causes of this problem.

One is by conduction losses. This happens when ducts are not insulated or are poorly insulated. A well-insulated duct allows the conditioned air to travel to its intended destination without being affected by the temperature that surrounds it. Without this important insulation, transfer of heat and cold to and from the air inside the duct with unconditioned space is inevitable.

The second way efficiency is lost is through duct leakage. "Air leaks in and out of ducts at all connections within a system," according to information on ducts.lbl.gov. "This leakage means that air that occupants have paid to have heated or cooled escapes from the heating or cooling system and does not heat or cool the house. Also, air that leaks into the heating and/ or cooling system increases the amount of outside air that must be heated or cooled."

So the better we can seal our duct work, the more efficient our systems will be. A "flexible duct" is seamless and generally will leak only where it connects at each end. Sheet metal duct has many seams and in turn much more potential for leakage. The best way to seal a duct seam is with duct mastic. It has a paste-like consistency upon application and when dry will still maintain some flexibility. This is important because of the expansion and contraction that occurs with temperature changes in ducts.

There also are various places on an air handler that can leak conditioned air. The sealing of these locations will affect the optimal performance of your HVAC equipment.

Qualified professionals are best equipped to do this work. A "duct blaster" test calculating duct leakage also can be performed to check before and after duct sealing has been done. The final results will indicate the amount of improvement that has been achieved. An opportune time to evaluate potential leakage of escaping air is while the ducts are pressurized during the test. It should also go without saying that furniture or other obstructions of duct registers should be moved and filters should be cleaned or replaced regularly.

While I have only scratched the surface on the riveting subject of duct leakage, I hope that this will motivate some readers to take steps toward making their heating and air systems more energy efficient. There are numerous benefits, including lower utility bills, longer-lasting HVAC equipment, a more comfortable home and improved indoor air quality.

Tehran plays war games in oil shipping zone

Iran's navy has begun a 10-day drill in international waters beyond the strategic Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, the passageway for about a third of the world's oil tanker traffic.

The exercise could bring Iranian ships into proximity with U.S. Navy vessels in the area.

Navy chief Adm. Habibollah Sayyari says Iran is holding the war games to show off its prowess and defense capabilities.

Kid band Vazquez Sounds takes Mexico by storm (AP)

MEXICO CITY ? Ten-year-old Angie Vazquez has become an Internet phenom belting out a soulful cover of Brit pop star Adele's "Rolling in the Deep." In an online video seemingly shot at home, her teenage brothers Abelardo and Gustavo play the keyboard, guitar and drums.

The video drew almost 18 million views, interviews on Mexico's major television networks and a mention on Good Morning America. Within weeks of its Nov. 11 posting, the so-called Vazquez Sounds signed a contract with Sony Music Mexico. They released their first album this week that includes another Internet smash cover, of Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas is You."

Their nearly overnight success online evokes the now legendary saga of Canadian 'tween idol Justin Bieber, who was discovered after his mother posted online amateur footage of him crooning and strumming.

"We make a lot of videos of a lot of things, but my son Abelardo wanted to record this song and share it with friends and family," said father Abelardo Vazquez in a telephone interview from the family's hometown of Mexicali, on the California border. "We really didn't expect the cover to become such a phenomenon on the Web."

Before you call the Vazquez clan Mexico's version of Bieber-mania, consider this: The elder Abelardo Vazquez is a professional music producer instrumental in creating the sound of well-known Mexican bands such as Reik and Nikki Clan, also from the border.

The videos of Angie and her brothers in their home studio are also professionally produced, mixed and lighted, with slick camera work.

Abelardo Vazquez says he's not driving his kids into the music business, though he acknowledges they've had a leg up.

"My kids have had a musical education since they were very young, because I have worked producing groups for many years," the father said.

When the video sparked interest in a few million people beyond the Vazquez's immediate circle, the decision to cut a CD was natural, Vazquez said.

He added that he retains total control over the project, and Sony music is working as a distributor.

"The contract with Sony isn't the traditional type," Vazquez said. "It isn't the typical contract with record companies, in which they used to control the artists' career. This is a family project."

Although Vazquez has had an eight-year relationship with Sony, Roberto Lopez, president of the label, said he and his team were unaware of the Vazquez Sounds and first heard the group like everyone else ? on the Internet.

Working with such a young group poses special challenges and "very strong personal care," Lopez said.

"It is something special because they are children, and we want them to stay in school," he said. "The agreement was that their involvement in music, which has been going on for years now, would continue without affecting their lifestyle."

Vazquez said other record companies had expressed interest, but Sony was the only one that met his conditions for the kids. Cynics note that Sony is also the label that signed some of Vazquez's other acts.

The CD includes the original cover of "Rolling in the Deep," a remix of that crowd pleaser and, at least in its online version, a more wobbly cover of the Mariah Carey song. Coincidentally, it's the same song Bieber included in his holiday season "Under the Mistletoe" disc.

In the meantime, the Vazquez Sounds have been invited to perform on television programs in the United States, Italy and England.

But they can pick and choose.

"The kids are not obligated to do promotional work like other acts," said the elder Vazquez. "We want them to live a life like any other child their age."

PLO May Pull About Face on Oslo - No Longer Recognizing Israel

Mohammed Shtayyeh, member of the Fatah Central Committee and one of the Palestinian Authority negotiators with Israel, was quoted Sunday
as saying that the Palestinians may cancel the agreements signed between the PLO and Israel.

Meanwhile, some PLO and Fatah leaders have privately criticized Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas for agreeing to
incorporate Hamas into the PLO.

At least three senior officials in Ramallah have voiced strong reservations over the decision, a Fatah official told The Jerusalem
Post. He said that those who were opposed to the move were worried that Hamas would replace Fatah as the dominant party in the PLO.

One official was quoted as saying that Abbas was paving the way for Hamas and Islamic Jihad to take control not only over the PLO, but the
entire West Bank as well.

Shtayyeh's comments were published by the London-based Asharq Al Awsat newspaper.

This was not the first time that a senior PA official had talked about
the possibility of abrogating the Oslo Accords.

The comments came less than 48 hours after Hamas and Islamic Jihad
agreed to join a temporary leadership of the PLO that would prepare
for new elections for the organization's two key bodies - the
Palestine National Council and Executive Committee.

In response to a question about Israeli settlements, Shtayyeh said:
"If Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu insists that there is no
difference between the settlement of Abu Ghneim [Har Homa] and Tel
Aviv, we won't distinguish between Ramallah and Jaffa."

With regards to the PLO's decision to recognize Israel in 1993,
Shtayyeh explained: "The recognition of Israel was not a balanced
recognition. The PLO recognized Israel in the geographic sense, but
Israel did not recognize Palestine geographically, but as an
institution. Israel only recognized the PLO. Now we are demanding a
mutual recognition. We want Israel to recognize the Palestinian
territories of 1967."

Shtayyeh said the Palestinians' efforts would from now on focus on
internal affairs. "President [Mahmoud] Abbas is now interested in
reuniting the Palestinians," he said. "In the year 2012, their will be
a political vacuum because the US will be preoccupied with
presidential elections, the Europeans with the Euro crisis and the
Arabs with their "Spring."

Windows Registry Errors: Finding and Correcting Them

If there happen to be errors in your machine registry, the efficiency of such machine may diminish severely and also often several programs can be altered. Quite a few won't start normally, regularly very cold or even stopping while some may work strange, system registry errors can also lead to a computer or laptop to stop responding dependant upon the extent of these inaccuracies. If you are a specialist with PCs, you could see the pop up messages and resolve such problems one by one although the majority of people will not even know what the registry is, thus what ways can they tackle this kind of issue? Here, I'm going to focus on a number of things which an individual could take to be able to look for and also fix registry errors to quicken the functionality of the computer.
One can find a couple of ways you could employ in correcting errors in your system registry, the first is to repair the mistakes on your own by personally finding the place the issues are then entering the accurate values in the registry. This isn't an effortless job because typing in bad figures can be an even serious threat to your computer or laptop in comparison with lost details, and that means you may just attempt this when you're certain in what you do. The other one technique is to hire a specialist to check out your computer, get when the inaccuracies can be and fix them. Whilst this approach is really costly, it is a lot better than fumbling about in a windows registry by yourself. Be sure that that pro you get is actually skillful when it comes to microsoft windows computer and is going to perform the job.
By far one of the best and reliable approach you should use would be to download and install some system registry cleaner to have the issues within your registry fixed conveniently. You should know that there are so many apps over the internet which carry out registry fix review?but they are simply not all the same, it is crucial for you to be diligent and discover the best app that provides a great many additional characteristics for example backing up the computer registry, forewarning a person whenever a malware tries to corrupt the system registry and perhaps performing routine checks on the system registry to identify then tackle whatever mistakes that might be present. An advantage with this tactic is you don't have to be a pro in order to deal with the registry, any computer end user can search a PC, see mistakes and fix them with ease.
Looking for the suitable registry fixer is actually another venture that can be demanding if you do not realize what features to search for in a windows reg fixer. Since there are plenty of windows registry scanners sold in the market these days, you will have to research widely in forums and even assessment sites and find the one which will be most suitable in restoring a computer or laptop without a lot difficulty. It must be convenient, trusted and automatic so that it searches the system registry on a regular basis. A good program to fix computer registry mistakes also needs to have the ability to update routinely and when possible provide you with great tips on ways to secure the computer or laptop from damage presented by by applications, viruses as well as malware which leave modifications on the system registry.
