University of Iowa re Holmes: "Do NOT offer admission"

A booking photo of Colorado shooting suspect James Holmes (HANDOUT)

?The University of Iowa rejected a 2011 application by suspected theater shooter James Holmes, saying "Do NOT offer admission under any circumstances," according to documents obtained Thursday by The Denver Post.

Two of the Iowa officials looking through the applications agreed not to make an offer to Holmes, though their reasoning is unclear.

On Jan. 30, 2011, Daniel Tranel, apparently on the admissions committee, sent an email about seven "applicants from this past weekend." The names of the other students were blacked out. Of the seven, only Holmes was dismissed as an applicant. The others generated comments such as "stellar" or "solid, not spectacular."

Mark Blumberg, also apparently on the committee, returned

an email, saying, "James Holmes: I agree with Dan. Don't admit."

The documents released after a formal records request include an essay that Holmes, a graduate of the University of California at Riverside, apparently wrote to explain why he sought a graduate degree in neuroscience.

He wrote that he had chosen to pursue a life of learning, focusing on the way memory works.

Holmes wrote that he has "always been fascinated by the complexities of long lost thought seemingly arising out of nowhere into a stream of awareness. These fascinations likely stemmed from my interest in puzzles and paradoxes as an adolescent and continued through my curiosity in academic research."

He detailed a time that he was a camp counselor, working with kids ages 10 to 11. He noted that two of the 12 children had attention deficit disorder, and another child had schizophrenia. One night that child awoke at 3:30 a.m. and began vacuuming the ceiling of the cabin.

"These kids were heavily medicated, but this did not solve their problems," he wrote. "The medication changed them from being highly energetic creative kids to lax beings who slept through the activities."

In a letter of recommendation from an unidentified official at Riverside, Holmes was described as "truly exceptional."

Other documents showed his grade point average from Riverside was 3.9. He also said that he was applying at Texas A&M, University of Michigan, University of Alabama, University of Colorado and Kansas University. He doesn't mention the University of Illinois.

Holmes did submit an application to the University of Illinois. In contrast to the response from Iowa, Illinois offered Holmes a position in their neuroscience program. Holmes rejected that offer to attend the University of Colorado Denver.

Holmes, 24, is accused of killing 12 people and injuring 58 others in a midnight shooting on July 20 inside a movie theater in Aurora.

The Absurdity of Patent Trolls | SiliconANGLE

patent trollsSeriously, when will all of this patent BS end? Notwithstanding all the Apple-Samsung nonsense lately, Gigaom.com is now reporting news of yet another troll hoping to capitalize on America?s nonsensical patent laws to extort millions of dollars from some of the country?s top tech companies.

The troll in question is Scott Moskowitz, owner of the rather dubious-looking Blue Spike LLC, who claims that several prominent companies (including Google, Facebook and a dozen or so others) are illegally using a patented digital water-marking technique of his that is supposed to prevent online piracy.

According to Gigaom:

?Blue Spike?s legal filings explain that Moskowitz is ?a pioneer in this new field between cryptography and signal analysis? and say that the ?signal abstracting? he invented is a novel way to detect unlicensed music, text and films on the internet.?

Some might say that this is fair enough ? after all, Moskowitz did (apparently) invent the signal abstracting technique. But the fact is that all Moskowitz is actually doing is abusing the patent system.

A quick look at his company?s website confirms this view ? Blue Spike does NOTHING but hold people to ransom. It doesn?t sell anything, it doesn?t have any clients, so what use is the technology to them, really? Blue Spike might hold the patents, but should this really give Moskowitz the right to demand payment from anyone that uses anti-piracy software, considering that he?s made no effort to market it himself?

A number of intelligent arguments have been made that say he shouldn?t, and indeed, these are the cornerstone of a new bill proposed to the Senate just last month. ?The SHIELD act ??Saving High-Tech Innovators from Egregious Legal Disputes ? basically argues that people like Moskowitz should forfeit their ?so-called ?rights? to innovations if they don?t actually do anything with them:

?If a person or company files a patent lawsuit, and the court believes that the suit has weak credible patent usage, the person or company that filed the patent suit would have to pay for the legal costs of the defendant. So the SHEILD act would turn the once easy profit from patent licensing into a potential loss for the plaintiff if there is not justifiable damage being done.?

As Representative Peter DeFazio from Oregon, who sponsored the bill, points out:

?Patent trolls don?t create new technology and they don?t create American jobs. ?They pad their pockets by buying patents on products they didn?t create and then suing the innovators who did the hard work and created the product.?

Moskowitz might have the legal ?right? to the patents he owns, but with hindsight, granting the patents in the first place was absurd. Forget the rest of the legal nonsense and whatever so-called experts might say ? if he isn?t going to bring any products to the market, then he doesn?t deserve them.

From what I understand, patents are supposed to protect innovators, so that others cannot steal their ideas and make money from them, but seeing as Moskowitz is not actually making money from his idea, other than in a BS roundabout way, does he really have anything that deserves legal protection?

Put it another way, suppose for a moment that ?Moskowitz didn?t demand people buy a license from him, yet he refused to let anyone use his idea ? does this mean that for the rest of eternity, no one is allowed to use what is the industry standard anti-piracy system ever again? Probably not. Eventually, someone would challenge it and his patent would be revoked on the principle of ?weak credible usage?.

But because he does demand that people buy a license from him, and because he threatens legal action against those who don?t comply, he gets backed by the full force of the law.

As I said, the situation is absurd.

The Simple Reason You Should Learn About Media ? ArticleDevlist ...

About Online Video Technology

Online video sources get news and information to more people than ever before. All kinds of entrepreneurs, marketers and advertisers have gotten onboard, using online videos for every imaginable purpose. It is not just news and information scoring high marks in online viewership, but also the educational and entertainment areas that show a steady rise in the numbers of users. Here are some of the reasons we have seen for this huge increase in the last few years.

As noted above, the online video phenomenon has been duly noted by advertisers, marketers and entrepreneurs and they are using it to their great advantage. Entertainment sites, blogs and social networking sites have all added online video content in the last couple years and this fact has contributed greatly to the fact that the monthly total number of videos watched online has more than doubled recently and continues to increase. With such increases in the number of videos being viewed there are equivalent increases in opportunities to advertise and get your product message out there.

In the educational field, more colleges and universities than ever before are adding online courses to their annual class offerings. In the past such an enterprise would have been impossible. There have been correspondence classes in the past, but never before online video technology did a non-traditional student have the opportunity to attend a class and interact with a professor during the lecture from the comfort of home.

Online video content is distributed in a lot of different ways. The best way is known as video on demand. This one is most used in the entertainment area. In entertainment you can find more video streaming sites where a customer can access movies and television shows online instantly. As you might have noticed, this is so huge that most video stores have gone out of business, their rental DVD?s unable to compete with instant video streaming at ridiculously low monthly membership fees.

The main thing contributing to this phenomenon is the fact that more people than ever also have broadband internet service and computer hardware fast and reliable enough to support online video content. Add to this the new tablet market and the explosion in the use of smart phones for viewing videos and you have a recipe for advertising opportunities that will continue to rise in the foreseeable future.

As there is no end sight, online video technologies are sure to be one of the biggest growth industries in the future. With more video content being made available every day, better improved computer hardware and faster running software platforms will be required to handle these increases efficiently.

Asia stocks mostly down amid economic uncertainty

TOKYO (AP) ? Shares were mostly lower in Asia on Thursday, as wary investors watched for U.S. moves to spur growth, shrugging off an upward revision in U.S. economic growth figures.

The Tokyo Stock Exchange's benchmark Nikkei fell 0.7 percent to 9,004.47 and South Korea's Kospi slipped 1.5 percent to 1,900.37. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index lost 1.2 percent to 19,551.04 while Australia's S&P/ASX 200 shed 1.1 percent to 4,306.80.

Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan, Indonesia and mainland China fell while shares edged higher in New Zealand.

Investors are waiting for signs of fresh moves to revive the U.S. economic recovery that could come in a key speech by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke at a conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming on Friday.

Analysts say global stock trading will likely remain thin pending the outcome of that meeting, as investors are cautious about taking risky bets with so many unclear signals on the direction of the economy.

The U.S. Commerce Department announced Wednesday that the American economy grew at a 1.7 percent annual rate in the April-June quarter, yet another signal the world's No. 1 economy is experiencing a modest recovery.

Though the revision was bigger than an initial estimate of 1.5 percent, the news failed to boost U.S. markets.

The U.S. data actually was a discouraging factor in the sense that it suggests no major monetary easing is likely, said Jackson Wong of Tanrich Securities in Hong Kong.

With China due for a major change in the Communist Party leadership, the share benchmark there dropped to a three-year low on Wednesday, with no sign of relief soon.

"We just don't have any catalyst. No rebound is likely without a major policy move," Wong said.

In Europe overnight, the FTSE index of leading British shares fell 0.6 percent to close at 5,743.53, while France's CAC-40 pulled back 0.5 percent to 3,413.89. The DAX in Germany, meanwhile, eked out a gain of 0.1 percent at 7,010.57.

Investors are hoping the Federal Reserve will give the economy a fresh boost, and nothing in the U.S. central bank's "Beige Book" survey on how the economy is faring, released late Wednesday, would discourage the Fed from helping the economy.

That report showed the U.S. economy grew moderately in July and early August, and hiring was more robust than in the previous six-week period.

Strength in auto sales, tourism and home sales in July and early August offset weakness in manufacturing, it said.

Overshadowed by gloomy news from Europe, U.S. markets drew little encouragement from the upbeat data, with the Dow Jones industrial average ending the day nearly flat at 13,107.48 while the broader Standard & Poor's index edged 0.1 percent higher to 1,410.49.

The euro rose to $1.2537 from $1.2528 late Wednesday in New York. The dollar fell to 78.63 yen from 78.70 yen.

Benchmark oil for October delivery fell 49 cents to $95 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Ex-Stock Broker: I Realized That Most Of What I ... - Yahoo! Finance

Follow The Daily Ticker on Facebook!

Many of those who work on Wall Street go through a process in which they gradually learn that what is perceived as "smart investing" is often unbelievably dumb.

Specifically, they learn that many of the recommendations that Wall Street makes--and the transactions that Wall Street gets paid to facilitate--are not in their clients' best interests.

And once they learn that, they face a choice:

Continue to make the same bad recommendations and trades

Or change the way they do business, often in exchange for a lower initial salary.

One of those who changed is Josh Brown, a former stock broker who now writes a well-read financial blog called The Reformed Broker.

Once he realized that he was hurting clients by selling them stocks he didn't think they should buy, Brown abandoned being a "broker" and became a financial adviser at Fusion Analytics. In this new job, Brown says, his interests and his client interests are more closely aligned.

Most people don't recognize that there's even a difference between a "stock broker" and a "financial advisor," but there is. And for clients, it's a critically important difference.

Stock brokers. who generally work for brokerage firms, do not have to recommend trades that they think are in your best interests. Rather, they just have to recommend securities that are "suitable" for you (a much lower standard). Financial advisors, meanwhile, have a fiduciary duty to act in the best interests of their clients. Although even this standard is often violated (by financial advisors who don't understand the importance of low fees to investment returns, for example), it's a much higher standard. And, all else being equal, no one looking for sound financial advice should ever work with a stock broker over a financial advisor.

E-discovery: 4 scenarios that call for computer forensics | Systems ...

A working knowledge of the science of computer forensics should be an essential part of every litigation counsel?s e-discovery toolkit.?Unlike traditional e-discovery, which only compels the exchange of computer data that is reasonably accessible, computer forensics uncovers computer data that is hard to reach, has been lost/destroyed or is too voluminous/disparate to comprehend.

Although the information uncovered after a forensic analysis can often alter the course of a case, it can be risky and expensive. It generally costs between $500 and $800 to collect and preserve a hard drive. Moreover, a licensed computer forensics specialist (whom you must engage if you want your evidence to hold up in court) will charge between $100 and $250 per hour to analyze the collected information, and even though you?ve spent the money, there is no guarantee the analysis will yield a shred of information that is useful to your case. Therefore, to hedge your company?s risk, you should understand how computer forensics can help your case before engaging an expert.

Business disputes that traditionally benefit from computer forensics

Although every case will require an independent assessment of the costs of computer forensics vs. the benefit of the information it might yield, there are a few fact scenarios in which computer forensics has proved helpful.

1. Deleted information/Destroyed device

Just because you can?t find it doesn?t mean it?s lost forever. ?Deleted? computer files are not destroyed; they are saved in a computer?s ?unallocated space,? in a format not easily understood by humans. A computer forensics specialist can retrieve and understand information that was previously deleted, including (but not limited to) emails, Internet browsing history, document drafts and calendar appointments. Furthermore, computer forensics specialists have been able to uncover similar data from devices that appear to have been physically destroyed (e.g., fire, water damage, will not turn on). Therefore, if you believe your case involves important information that may have been deleted from a device, or a device itself that has been destroyed, don?t assume the information you seek is lost. Instead, consult a computer forensics specialist to ascertain what?s left.

2. Stolen/Leaked information

Whether someone improperly downloaded information to a thumb disk or stole it through illegal online access to your company?s computer system, computer forensics can help you determine what information was stolen, when it was stolen and (in some instances) who stole it. This capability is especially helpful in proving that former employees have absconded with a company?s intellectual property (i.e., financial information, client lists and other proprietary information) or that competitors are stealing trade secrets.

3. Fraud

Generally, cases of complex business fraud (whether ?internal or external) require expertise in the interplay between disparate and complex IT systems (e.g., how the inventory software relates to the billing software) to uncover irregularities and inconsistencies. Computer forensics is becoming increasingly adept at synthesizing voluminous data to help prove the fraud.

4. Timeline of events

Computers keep accurate usage logs, i.e., metadata. Metadata can be critical in cases in which notice or intent are elements, but can be easily (and permanently) destroyed if not collected in a forensically defensible manner.

In conclusion, forensic computing is not for every case. To use it effectively, you have to understand what information you are seeking and how it will help your case.

Dinner and bubble tea at Tri-ty Caf? in Richmond on August 17, 2012.

Tri-ty Cafe | Richmond, BC

I've been on a beef noodle and bubble tea spree as of late. However, I hadn't returned to my de facto Taiwanese cafe of Tri-ty in a while. I basically always get the same things?and this time was no different.

Tri-ty Cafe | Richmond, BCTri-ty Cafe | Richmond, BC

I needed to cool off from the heatwave outside and ordered a mango ice cream slush. I always love the scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. It makes everything better. Janice?got a half-sweetened jasmine milk tea with pearls. It was a little too frothy and bland for my taste.

Tri-ty Cafe | Richmond, BC

I forgot how much I loved the house special spicy beef noodles here (much better than Zephyr and up there with Tony's). The soup was flavourful and mighty tasty with the right amount of spice. I drank it all up despite the heat outside. Surprisingly good.

Tri-ty Cafe | Richmond, BC

I was, however, very?disappointed?by other staple of tomato fried rice wrapped in an egg with a fried chicken cutlet. The chicken was good but the rice was day old and clumpy. I've ordered this a bunch of times and this is the only time its been so under par.

Tri-ty Cafe | Richmond, BC

Despite the rice setback, I still think Tri-ty is always a solid pick for Taiwanese food and drink. I love their selection of ice cold slushes and ice cream drinks. Make sure to do yourself a favour and get the house special spicy beef noodles.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 23, 2012

Contact: HHS Press Office
(202) 690-6343

Today, Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced the next steps in the Obama administration?s work to help doctors and hospitals use electronic health records.

?The changes we?re announcing today will lead to more coordination of patient care, reduced medical errors, elimination of duplicate screenings and tests and greater patient engagement in their own care,? Secretary Sebelius said.

Under the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act, doctors, health care professionals and hospitals can qualify for Medicare and Medicaid incentive payments when they adopt and meaningfully use certified electronic health record (EHR) technology.

More than 120,000 eligible health care professionals and more than 3,300 hospitals have qualified to participate in the program and receive an incentive payment since it began in January 2011. That exceeds a 100,000 goal set earlier this year.

That includes more than half of all eligible hospitals and critical access hospitals and 1 out of every 5 eligible health care professionals.? The program is divided into three stages:

  • Stage 1 sets the basic functionalities electronic health records must include such as capturing data electronically and providing patients with electronic copies of health information.
  • Stage 2 (which will begin as early as 2014) increases health information exchange between providers and promotes patient engagement by giving patients secure online access to their health information.
  • Stage 3 will continue to expand meaningful use objectives to improve health care outcomes.

Today, HHS? Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and HHS? Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT released final requirements for stage 2 that hospitals and health care providers must meet in order to qualify for incentives during the second stage of the program, and criteria that electronic health records must meet to achieve certification.

The requirements announced today:

  • Make clear that stage two of the program will begin as early as 2014. No providers will be required to follow the Stage 2 requirements outlined today before 2014.
  • Outline the certification criteria for the certification of EHR technology, so eligible professionals and hospitals may be assured that the systems they use will work, help them meaningfully use health information technology, and qualify for incentive payments.
  • Modify the certification program to cut red tape and make the certification process more efficient.
  • Allow current ?2011 Edition Certified EHR Technology? to be used until 2014.

The CMS final rule also provides a flexible reporting period for 2014 to give providers sufficient time to adopt or upgrade to the latest EHR technology certified for 2014.

Attrition: A Customer Relationship Opportunity | TOP Step Consulting

Written by: Jodi Cicci, President and CEO, TOP Step Consulting LLC

When an employee leaves for another job opportunity, it may be difficult to fill the hole, especially if he or she is responsible for managing a number of projects, initiatives, or engagements with your key customers. These projects will need a new team leader or manager?so how do you approach finding someone to fill those shoes? Some factors to consider include:

  • Who is available?
  • Who is best qualified for the particular project scope?
  • Does anyone have a previous positive experience with the customers?
  • Can someone from within the existing team be promoted or take on extra work?
  • What stage is the project in, and is a replacement really required?

A starting point might be to pinpoint someone who is available, and then begin narrowing down the field by skill sets and customer experience. This serves the operational management needs of increasing utilization, as you may be pulling someone off the bench or using a resource that is scheduled to free up shortly. Sounds like a solid approach, but have you considered the following questions?

  • How long will it take for a new person to gain an understanding of the project?
  • How will the person be received by the customer? How long until a solid relationship is in place?
  • Do you know what the customer likes about the current lead and what they disliked?
  • Do you have a consistent methodology in place so a new lead would follow the practices of the current lead?
  • And, again, what stage is the project in?

Now you are looking at your employee attrition through the eyes of the customer. Their project is your connection to one another and forms the basis for the relationship between customer and vendor. If the project is not going well, then the relationship is strained. Handling attrition of your team lead or project manager is an opportunity for your organization to enhance the customer relationship in place and demonstrate your ability to smoothly and adeptly handle change as a normal part of business.

The ?what stage is the project in? question is listed twice above. This is because it is an important consideration in determining how to handle the employee replacement question. If the project has just started, or is in an early discovery phase, the replacement of an employee with another qualified and skilled lead may be the best option. Early project stages tend to allow quicker ramp-up, as there isn?t much historical or legacy information to learn and customer relationships are still evolving as project activities start up.

What if the project is in the middle of, or approaching, a critical test window? I?d argue that promoting from within the existing team would be a priority in order to allow continued progress with little disruption. Promoting from within may not always be possible, but quite often I?ve found that teams rally together when projects enter critical phases and individuals stand out, which can help with the transition. Backfilling a team member such as a developer or trainer may be a bit easier than a lead resource since they would be coached by the team and not have to work on both the project ramp-up and the customer relationship at the same time.

And, finally, what about projects approaching the end of their life cycle, such as a go-live date with support afterward? Does a new lead need to be appointed? This is a good topic to discuss with the customer, because they may feel autonomous by this point or may simply desire a point of contact for escalations without the formal team structure going forward.

In all of these cases, the customer needs to be aware of the plan. This gives you, as the employer and vendor, the opportunity to have direct management contact with the client. The employee or team lead will most likely have initial conversations with the customer, but I would say that management has an opportunity here to advance their relationship with the client and also demonstrate their recognition of customer importance. By getting involved as a manager, you can ensure that you know the customer situation personally, you?ll be able to answer all those questions above regarding what they like and don?t like, and you can provide a communication path that the customer may leverage to provide feedback?both bad and good.

Taking the time to ensure you select the right resource to meet the project and customer needs will demonstrate your professionalism as a company and your depth of skill sets among your team. As an added bonus, you?ll also be advertising how your methodology promotes success in light of unexpected risks.

Blessings for Home and Health | Bumpyboobs

Before leaving Hungary we paid a visit to Zsolt?s grandmother. Her name is Anna, and she lives in a house all alone with a garden so large you could get lost amongst the apple trees, tomato bushes, strawberry plants, raspberries, grapes and climbing vines. Near the front of the garden (close to her many potted cactuses) are a few fruit trees ? white peaches, yellow peaches, plums, and pears. My favourite are the peaches; they?re nearly as large as your head. (Well I exaggerate slightly, but they are huge.)

So we visited Anna, Zsolt?s grandmother, to eat some peaches and discuss the family tree. (Zsolt is hard at work on his family tree, and occasionally he and his grandmother get together and conspire over names, dates and locations.) The conversation rolled from one thing to another ? all in Hungarian, so I kept myself busy eating a giant peach, peeling off the skin with a 70 year old paring knife Anna had saved, and dropping peach slices occasionally onto my dress, onto the floor, and onto the table cloth (probably also ancient ? Anna keeps everything, and in perfect condition too. I do not have this talent, as we?ve already established.)

Well the conversation was rolling, and moved to the topic of needlework. Along with their paprika and lace, Hungarians are known for beautiful bright coloured needlework. Anna, back when her eyesight was better, was a master with the needle. She has numerous beautiful pillows that she made herself with the thread and needle. (And in fact, she?d just picked up a pillow case from the market for me which she gave to me while I was eating my giant peach. Woohoo!)

But even more special than the pillow case and flowers, has got to be the home blessing. This is a ?poem? or just a special thought that people keep in their home to bless it, and will pass along generation to generation. Zsolt mentioned to his grandmother how one day he?d like to put a home blessing in wherever we end up living ? and guess what? Well, I am sure you can guess. She gave him a very special home blessing. This isn?t one she sewed herself, it?s from a generation prior ?made? by the second wife of Zsolt?s Great Grandfather?s. Unlike the pillow cases, this doesn?t highlight any flowers. Instead it?s very simple.

White cloth with blue thread. There are two angles stitched into the cloth, and between them they hold a banner. It reads as follows:

H?zi ?ldas

Hol hit ott Szeretet

Hol szeretet ott b?k?

Hol Beke ott ?ld?s

Hol ?ld?s ott isten

Hol listen ott sz?ks?g nincsen.

Which translates into

Home Blessing

Where belief there is love,

Where love there is peace,

Where peace there is blessing,

Where blessing there is God,

Where God there is nothing else needed.

Is that wonderful, or what? I think so very much, and it?s made even more special to realize this blessing has been in several generations of the Mucsi family homes, now to be in ours. We?ll hang it in a place of honour for sure.

And I was thinking, now that we have a home blessing (good signs of soon finding a HOME), maybe I should write myself a health blessing as well. Something like,

Where Peace there is Health

Where Health there is Gratitude

Where Gratitude there is Love

Where Love there is God

Where God, nothing else is needed.

I?m not always 100% chatty about my feelings on God, but I do believe in the amazingness of life, of the remarkable miracle of our existence, of a big ?something? out there that holds us together (it gives me comfort when I remember that earth is not much more than a speck of dust floating through space),

And you know what else? I believe in staying healthy, happy and cancer-free. In fact, it?s my personal motto.

Do you have a home blessing? What about a health blessing? What would you write in yours, if you decided to go ahead and bless yourself with a few simple words?

Anyhow. That?s my story of Anna, the garden, her needle work and this beautiful home blessing.

(By the by, we are now sailing across the ocean toward New York on the Queen Mary. This post has been made possible by wordpress's wonderfully convenient 'Publish' option - and I actually scheduled it for publication last week. So you are reading my words, in this moment, from the past! Freaky stuff. Or maybe not . . . isn't that what we're always doing when reading people's work?)

I was diagnosed with breast cancer a few days after my one year wedding anniversary. That was a shocker. Since then I?ve had a mastectomy, chemotherapy and have just started radiotherapy. Life is challenging , but nevertheless inspiring. Cancer kicked me in the butt, (for better and for worse ? it turned me into a writer, not just someone who writes, so maybe that?s worth the loss of hair?) and now I?m kicking it back ? only harder. Much harder.

Basic Business Website Design Checklist

Churchill Club Top 10 Tech Trends DebateCreating a website for your business is a necessity now as more people turn to the internet to make their purchases. Traditional stores may be suffering but online selling continues to grow with no end in sight just yet. Because of the popularity of the web for selling products and services, you need a website that will help you stand out, so what should you check when creating your new site?

Checking Information

Using the correct information on your website is essential especially in terms of product specifications, service descriptions and pricing. Make sure you are double and triple checking all vital information before you make your website go live.

Creating all of your website content will take a lot of writing so you may want to have this done for you. Provide your writer with any product brochures or old marketing that they can use to get a better idea about your product.

Regular Content

Creating initial and ongoing content for your website will really help it in the search engine rankings. This can be in the form of regular product and special updates about your business or even entertaining content for your blog. If you do not have a blog connected to your website then it is easy to have one created for you by your developer.

Easy to Contact

Make sure that you are easily contactable through your website. This can be done by adding contact widget to your site or even a direct Voip connection to your office. You should also provide connections to your social media accounts on Facebook or Twitter so customers can easily post any questions or problems directly to you.

Depending on your business, you could even start a bulletin board, although these can be time consuming to maintain. They do allow customers to chat to you and others online as well as post more detailed questions and even feedback. Remember that this open style forum can come back to haunt you when dealing with angry customers.

Functional and Fast Loading

Even though the speed of most internet services has increased dramatically, you should still have your website design lean and fast. When you are considering the right type of website development it is easy to be tempted with high resolution graphics. These look great but if you use too many it can slow down your server and cause problems with page load speeds for customers. Customers will quickly click away from your site if it is taking forever to load.

This will also depend on your site host as well as the number of people you think may be online at the same time. Make sure that your static pages are being cached in some form so your database is not being overloaded with requests.

Social Media Presence

Social media is now a necessary part of operating online but not many businesses have good social media accounts. Work slowly to build your social media contact list but also take advantage of it as a way to help customers have their questions answered. Again, be careful with what you say and respond to customer complaints and queries as soon as you can.

THE ADVANTAGES OF OUTSOURCING PAYROLL

?????8/24/2012, August 24, 2012 ? ?

Many companies still choose to do their payroll in-house, but is it really the best option?

The average company does payroll on biweekly (or twice a month) basis, some on a weekly basis, and a few businesses pay once a month. With the advent of so many online payroll services these days, the questions for many businesses is, should they employ someone in-house to do payroll, or outsource it.

Outsourcing payroll can help a company move resources to areas of their business that make money, not cost it. A company?s focus should be on making profit, so in this sense, doing payroll in-house is more of a liability. However, some business owners feel that outsourcing gives them less control over their payroll when in fact the opposite is true. By using a good online payroll service, you actually gain more control as almost all online payroll systems keep meticulous records that can verified anytime by logging on to your account.

Another great benefit to outsourcing payroll is, not having to keep up with the ever changing tax compliance rules and laws. This alone is worth the fee paid for online payroll services.

But not all online payroll services are created equal. It?s best to know what your needs are and then shop to find the best pricing that offers the most. Be careful who you choose, especially if record archiving is important to you, as many payroll services will delete your files if you stop using their payroll system. Look for an online payroll service that archives your data, even if you stop using their services.

Aside from price, the second largest issue in using a payroll service is customer care. In these days of automated phone options, one wonders if a living breathing person actually works at some of these places. So if human interaction is a major concern for you, make sure the company you decide to do business with really answers their phone, without sending you to Antarctica for support.

Next, you want to consider the learning curve. Some online payroll systems require you learn a confusing array of commands to get going, while others are so easy a fifth grader could use them. An easy to use payroll system doesn?t mean you?re not getting your monies worth, it just means it was well thought out.

For small to medium sized businesses the pain of doing payroll is not real great, it?s the quarterly and annual reports for state and federal that leaves a lot of small business owners groaning from the paperwork, not to mention how time consuming it can be. Most payroll service providers include these reports with their monthly fees, but check the fine type to make sure you?re not paying extra for it.

What to look for.
Find a payroll service where you?re not bound by a term contract, meaning, you can quit the service from one payroll cycle to the next; is affordably priced, has great customer service, archives your data, no set-up fees, and won?t charge you extra for quarterly and annual reports, and, one that offers you a verity of ways in how you pay your employees. Also, if your company is a one man operation, make sure you use a payroll service that will only charge you for times you actually use the service, and not just a monthly recurring fee.

Syria vows to work with new UN envoy as fighting rages

Syria said it is ready to work with new UN envoy Lakhdar Brahimi and hopes he can pave the way for "national dialogue," even as fighting raged in both the capital and second city Aleppo.

State media hailed the recapture by the army of three Christian neighbourhoods in the heart of Aleppo, but clashes between troops and rebel fighters raged in other parts of the city and in the southern belt of Damascus.

Syria's deputy foreign minister Faisal Muqdad accused neighbouring Turkey of providing the rebels with arms and rear bases, as Turkish and US officials held talks on hastening President Bashar al-Assad's fall.

Muqdad said Damascus would cooperate with Brahimi, the veteran Algerian diplomat named as UN-Arab League envoy to replace former UN chief Kofi Annan after his announcement on August 2 that he was stepping down following the failure to implement his six-point peace plan.

"We have informed the United Nations that we accept the appointment of Mr Brahimi," Muqdad told a Damascus news conference.

"We are looking forward to seeing... what ideas he is giving for potential solutions for the problem here," he added.

Muqdad's comments came after Damascus on Monday sharply criticised comments by the new envoy that a civil war was already underway in Syria and that his mission was to end it.

Muqdad said he hoped Brahimi would help kick-start a process of national dialogue.

"There will be no winners in Syria, as the West is betting there will be. Syria will win, thanks to its people, its leader and its government, which will make the right choices in the midst of these difficult circumstances," he said.

Muqdad said "foreign interference" was the leading cause of the 17-month-conflict, which the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Thursday has now killed nearly 25,000 people since March last year.

"The (factors) that have fuelled this crisis are well-known -- armed groups, terrorist groups supported by regional circles, including the dangerous support by Turkey of terrorist gangs, providing these with sophisticated weapons," he said.

Turkey has repeatedly denied giving arms to the rebels but it has given sanctuary to the defecting soldiers who formed the original kernel of the Free Syrian Army as well as to tens of thousands of civilian refugees.

Turkish and US officials held their first "operational planning" meeting aimed at hastening the end of Assad's regime.

Turkish foreign ministry deputy under-secretary Halit Cevik and US ambassador Elisabeth Jones led the delegations made up of intelligence agents, military officials and diplomats at the Ankara talks, a foreign ministry source told AFP.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced plans for the forum following talks in Istanbul on August 11 as Washington signalled it was looking for new ways to put pressure on Assad after his traditional allies Beijing and Moscow blocked action at the UN Security Council.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande pushed Thursday for a Security Council decision regarding the humanitarian situation in Syria.

"We are going to insist that the Security Council takes the necessary decisions and that the international dialogue advances, especially concerning the humanitarian situation," Merkel said at a press conference during a Berlin summit with the French leader.

"We are acting together with the Europeans, with all those who consider that Bashar al-Assad cannot stay at the head of his country because he is endangering the lives of his people," Hollande added.

France meanwhile indicated that it would consider supporting a partial no-fly zone over Syria. French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian however warned that shutting all of Syria's air space would mean "going to war" and would require a willing international coalition that has not yet materialized.

Aleppo residents reported heavy exchanges in the heart of the city during the army's recapture of three Christian neighbourhoods seized by the rebels at the weekend.

"We have had the worst two days of our lives," Sonia, the wife of a wealthy businessman in the northern city which is also Syria's commercial capital, told AFP by telephone.

"If our house weren't built like a fortress, we'd all be dead," said the resident of Telal, which the army seized on Wednesday along with Jdeide and Sulamaniyeh.

Jdeide and Telal were once frequented by tourists for their restaurants and handicraft shops but the heavy fighting between troops and fighters has left streets deserted apart from local youths on patrol, residents said.

After more than a month of fighting, the battle for Aleppo continued with fierce clashes and bombardment in other neighbourhoods of the city on Thursday, militants and residents said.

Nationwide, at least 111 people were killed in violence on Thursday, 71 of them civilians, the Observatory said, adding that more than 24,000 had now been killed since the uprising erupted.

In the capital, fighting focused on a belt of southern neighbourhoods and suburbs where opposition to the government runs strong, anti-regime activists said.

Activists and monitors reported clashes and shelling from Al-Hajar Al-Aswad in the southwest to the town of Daraya on the western outskirts of Damascus, in areas where the army battled to oust rebels last month.

Copywriting Advice: Getting the Most Out of Your Client Calls

Writing SEO-friendly content can be a challenge when you do it for your own company. It's even more difficult when another company asks you to do it for them. Not only are you tasked with writing SEO-enhanced content, but you're doing so for a company--possibly an entire industry--that you're not familiar with.??This is where a client call makes a world of difference. Well, can make a world of difference. Like the copy you plan to write, you need to make sure you optimize your time on the phone with the client and get as much out of the call as possible.?

Know the Customer?

When you write for a client, you're writing for their customer. That's your audience and that's who you need to get to know. In order for the copy to be successful and generate conversions, you're going to have to speak to that customer.?

Some questions to ask:

  • Who are your customers?
  • Why do customers choose you?
  • What are the most common questions you hear from customers?
  • What benefits do your customers get from your products?
  • What is the typical process your customers go through?
  • What kind of feedback do you get from your customers??
?Know the Client When asked to write SEO-friendly copy for a client, you're essentially ghostwriting for them. That means you'll have to drop your personal style of writing and adopt their brand and their tone. Of course, that's much easier said than done. But there are a few questions that you can ask on the call to get you heading in the right direction.?
  1. Do you like the site's current voice??
  2. Do you have any current marketing materials to review??
  3. Who are your competitors??
  4. What separates you from the competition??
  5. Have you found any approaches to be particularly successful/unsuccessful??
  6. Do you have any new promotions coming up??
  7. How do you follow-up with your customers??
  8. Do you collect reviews and can you share them??
Be Ready with Suggestions?

Naturally, when you write for a client who you've never worked with before, there's going to be some back and forth. They may not see things exactly how you see them. And in the end, they're paying for the service so they have the final say. With that said, if you have some suggestions ready to discuss on the phone before you actually start working on the content, you can save yourself both time and money. This will also provide you with a little direction to run with your notes.

Wildfire threat abates in Northern California

-- Residents of a tiny mountain town breathed easier Friday after air tankers and helicopters blunted the run of a massive wildfire in Northern California just outside Lassen Volcanic National Park.

"After hearing the news I think I feel a whole lot better today," said Bob Einck, adding that he didn't expect to have to carry possessions out of his vacation home in Mineral to protect them from fire danger Friday.

Fire crews working by air the previous day doused the spearhead of the Ponderosa Fire as it crept up the deep Battle Creek Canyon toward the park and the town of about 190 homes.

CalFire Division Chief Scott Lindgren said Thursday the air drops of fire retardant and water were focused on a "critical spot" where flames were burning the steep timbered sides of the canyon, about 6 miles from Mineral.

Brush and dirt in the area were colored orange-pink by a recent drop of retardant that helped to slow the fire's spread.

Sixty-four homes and 20 other buildings have been destroyed, mostly in the Manton area, since lightning ignited the blaze Saturday, state fire spokesman Don Camp said. It was still threatening 900 other homes as it burned a new front to the south.

About 2,500 firefighters were battling the blaze, which has grown to 44 square miles in the piney hills about 25 miles southeast of Redding.

The Ponderosa Fire was more than two-thirds contained Friday morning, said CalFire spokesman Daniel Berlant. Full containment is expected early next week

"We've definitely turned the corner, and we're really starting to make good progress in getting a handle on the fire," Berlant said.

Elsewhere in the state, a large wildfire in Plumas National Forest expanded with help from gusty winds. The blaze, about 120 miles north of Sacramento, has consumed 99 square miles since it started at the end of July and threatens about 900 homes. It was 55 percent contained Thursday night.

The California fires were among several stubborn wildfires in the West. In Washington, crews were still working on a week-old wildfire that has destroyed 51 homes and 26 outbuildings and damaged at least six other homes, authorities said.

The fire, about 75 miles east of Seattle, has caused an estimated $8.3 million in property damage.

In central Idaho, firefighters were burning and removing vegetation near the town of Featherville in hopes of protecting hundreds of evacuated homes from an approaching wildfire. Fire managers said that blaze already has charred 164 square miles, forcing the residents to evacuate due to heavy smoke.

PAUL RYAN ABC News' Shushannah Walshe: " Ryan Criticizes Obama on Defense Cuts, Remains Silent on Special Ops Criticizing President" At a defense roundtable in the town that's home to Fort Bragg, Paul Ryan spoke out against the looming $500 billion defense cuts, saying the president needed to explain how automatic, across-the-board cuts to the defense budget would affect military jobs and defense contracts. But when a question arose about the former special operations and intelligence members who are attracting headlines by actively criticizing the president for alleged security leaks and what they see as politicizing the killing of Osama Bin Laden, Ryan was silent, deferring to his spokesperson." The Los Angeles Times' Mitchell Landsberg: " Paul Ryan keeps up attack on Obama's welfare policies" Expanding his attack on President Obama's welfare policies, Rep. Paul D. Ryan charged Thursday that Obama "just wants to do away" with the work requirements mandated by a law President Clinton signed in 1996. "President Obama passed this new waiver the other day to strip out all the welfare reform work requirements," Ryan said at a fundraiser in Springfield, Mo., repeating a dubious claim that he and Mitt Romney have made for the last week. LINK

HEALTHCARE The Hills' Elise Vieback: " Romney defends his Mass. healthcare law as better than Obama's" Mitt Romney on Thursday defended the healthcare overhaul he oversaw in Massachusetts as better than the federal law it inspired. "My healthcare plan I put in place in my state has everyone insured," Romney told a CBS affiliate in Denver on Thursday, "but we didn't go out and raise taxes on people and have a unelected board tell people what kind of healthcare they can have." MITT ROMNEY The New York Times' Eric Lipton and Clifford Krauss: " Giving Reins to the States Over Drilling" By proposing to end a century of federal control over oil and gas drilling and coal mining on government lands, Mitt Romney is making a bid for anti-Washington voters in key Western states while dangling the promise of a big reward to major campaign supporters from the energy industry. The Washington Post's Philip Rucker: " Mitt Romney team of 'Mad Men' creates ads to sell nation on candidate" Now that Mitt Romney has amassed a couple hundred million dollars, it's largely up to an eclectic crew of self-described "Mad Men" to make good use of it. A colorful team of advertising gurus - including a onetime "Wheel of Fortune" contestant, a guy nicknamed for a "Super Mario" character and a burly Texan who came up with the "Beef, it's what's for dinner" slogan - have converged on the campaign's drab headquarters here to dream up the ads they hope will propel Romney to the White House. USA Today's Susan Page: " Romney's to-do list in Tampa starts with 'Hi, I'm Mitt'" Mitt Romney's to-do list at the Republican National Convention in Tampa next week starts with re-introducing himself to voters and ends with what could be his most critical hour of the campaign ahead: the speech. For four days (the threat of Tropical Storm Isaacnotwithstanding) Romney and the Republicans hope to repair damage from months of negative TV attacks, move on from this week's furor over "legitimate rape" and abortion, find footing in the economic issues that they'd prefer to talk about and leave with a head of steam that helps propel them through the campaign's final nine weeks. The Wall Street Journal's Monica Langley and Sara Murray: " Romney Prepares for His Hard Sell" Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney strides into a hotel suite in Columbus, Ohio, where a couch awaits. He waves at it and quips: "People would like me to lie down and let it all out." As he soon makes clear, Mr. Romney sees no reason to do that in the campaign's final stretch, which begins with his party's nominating convention next week. LINK

Bloomberg's Jim Snyder and Kasia Klimasinska: " Oil Donors Fete Romney Days Before Unveiling Energy Plan" While the presidential election isn't until November, it's already clear that Mitt Romney has won over America's oil and gas industry. Days removed from fundraisers attended by Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM)'s Chief Executive Officer Rex Tillerson and Continental Resources Inc. (CLR) Chairman Harold Hamm, Romney called for the aggressive development of fossil fuels to make the U.S. an "energy superpower" in a 21-page plan released yesterday. LINK

RON PAUL Politico's James Hohmann: " No Ron Paul revolution at convention" The Republican establishment has quelled theRon Paul Revolution, at least for 2012. Using a mix of charm and procedural hardball, Mitt Romney's campaign and his allies who control the Republican National Committee have ensured that the Texas congressman will neither speak nor be formally nominated at next week's convention. It's a significant victory for Romney, who could have been faced with a raucous rebellion from the Paul crowd if he hadn't extended an early, and diplomatic, olive branch to what's become a key constituency.
