Constellation Brands earns $75M profit in 1Q (AP)
ROCHESTER, N.Y. ? Constellation Brands Inc., which sells Robert Mondavi wine, Svedka vodka and Corona beer, said Thursday its first-quarter profit jumped 52 percent to $75 million on improved sales of wine, spirits and imported beers in North America.
Overall revenue, however, dropped 19 percent to $635 million largely because the company sold the bulk of its struggling Australian and British wine business in January.
Net income equaled 35 cents per share, beating Wall Street expectations. A year earlier, the company earned $49.1 million, or 22 cents a share, as sliding domestic sales of wine were more than offset by lower restructuring charges.
Wine and spirits sales rose 3 percent in the key North American market in the March-to-May quarter.
Excluding one-time items, including a $26 million charge related to the divestiture, Constellation earned 39 cents per share. Wall Street expected 37 cents, according to FactSet. However, revenue came in below analysts' expectations of $637 million.
Its shares edged up 3 cents to $20.99 in early trading. The stock is trading at the upper end of a 52-week range of $15.26 to $23.19.
Boosted by volume growth, operating earnings from Crown Imports, its beer joint venture with Mexican brewer Grupo Modelo SA, rose 10 percent to $120 million on a 9 percent rise in sales of $678 million. In contrast, U.S. sales of domestic beers have been lackluster this year with core customers ? men ages 21 to 34 ? hard hit by the tough economy.
"Crown delivered a surprise to the upside," UBS analyst Kaumil Gajrawala said in a note to clients, largely because of the robust sales of Victoria, Mexico's oldest beer. Grupo Modelo has owned the Victoria brand since 1935.
The company said it expects to earn between $1.82 and $1.92 a share in the current fiscal year, down from $2.62 in the previous fiscal year that ended in February. It reaffirmed that adjusted earnings will range from $1.90 to $2 per share, compared with $1.91 a year earlier.
Constellation Brands, based in Victor, N.Y., lost its eight-year status as the world's No. 1 winemaker when it sold 80 percent of its Australian and British wine business in January. Investors expect the sale to create a more profitable business with less risk.
"We have significantly improved our financial profile and simplified our business," CEO Robert Sands said.
The company has been shifting to higher-priced brands. Wine sales still account for more than 90 percent of its revenue.
Its wines include Clos du Bois, Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi, Blackstone and Ravenswood. It also sells liquors such as Black Velvet Canadian whiskey and imports such beers as Modelo Especiale from Mexico, Tsingtao from China and St. Pauli Girl from Germany.
Constellation Brands, which employs 6,000 people, is No. 2 in the global rankings of wine makers behind E. & J. Gallo Winery of Modesto, Calif. It had moved ahead of Gallo in 2003, when it bought Australian vintner BRL Hardy Ltd. for $1.1 billion.

Russian scientists expect to meet aliens by 2031 (Reuters)
MOSCOW (Reuters Life!) ? Russian scientists expect humanity to encounter alien civilizations within the next two decades, a top Russian astronomer predicted Monday.
"The genesis of life is as inevitable as the formation of atoms... Life exists on other planets and we will find it within 20 years," Andrei Finkelstein, director of the Russian Academy of Sciences' Applied Astronomy Institute, was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying.
Speaking at an international forum dedicated to the search for extraterrestrial life, Finkelstein said 10 percent of the known planets circling suns in the galaxy resemble Earth.
If water can be found there, then so can life, he said, adding that aliens would most likely resemble humans with two arms, two legs and a head.
"They may have different color skin, but even we have that," he said.
Finkelstein's institute runs a program launched in the 1960s at the height of the Cold War space race to watch for and beam out radio signals to outer space.
"The whole time we have been searching for extraterrestrial civilizations, we have mainly been waiting for messages from space and not the other way," he said.

After several years of traffic declines, visits to restaurants at supper increased over the last three quarters, according to foodservice market research from The NPD Group, a leading market research company.
Supper visits increased 2 percent and 1 percent in the third and fourth quarters of 2010, respectively, and increased 2 percent in the first quarter of 2011, according to NPD?s CREST? service, which continually tracks consumer use of foodservice outlets. Quick service restaurants, which represent 78 percent of total industry traffic, drove the growth at supper, while visits at midscale and casual dining remained weak.
?The improvement at supper may reflect some easing in unemployment, a modest improvement in consumer confidence as well as a release of pent up demand during the periods reported,? says Bonnie Riggs, NPD restaurant industry analyst. ?I also believe that rising food costs in-home have narrowed the gap between the price of food at-home and a restaurant meal.?
In addition to the traffic growth at supper, after eight consecutive quarters of traffic decline, customer counts at commercial restaurants started to improve in the third and fourth quarters of 2010 over the same quarters a year ago, and ended the first quarter of 2011 flat. Weekend visits recovered across all dayparts and families with kids have been returning to restaurant over the last six months. Visits to quick service restaurants were up 1 percent compared to a year ago.
?There continues to be areas of weakness in the industry, but the industry did pick up in the last few prior quarters. It remains to be seen, however, if we?ll be able to sustain the improvements given the current economic volatility,? says Riggs. ?All the reasons consumers go to restaurants ? convenience, varied selections, someone else doing the cooking ? are still valid and could continue to drive the industry?s improvement.?

Until recently, the precocious founders of Summit Series ran their exclusive conference fiefdom out of the Fantasy Factory, a 12-bedroom Miami mansion with a private chef, a pool, water views, and a trampoline. A few mornings per week, a yoga instructor was summoned to teach them to control their dreams and, using the Mayan calendar, read the day's energy. "If it was an organization day or endurance day," says yoga-cum-calendar-reading instructor Ken Von Roenn, "it would be announced on the house PA."
This April was particularly energetic. The seven executives (average age: 26) and their 14 employees -- nearly all of whom lived in the Fantasy Factory -- were preparing for Summit at Sea, their three-day maritime adventure. Like all Summit events, this one allowed young entrepreneurs to hang out, network, and facilitate the changing of the world. That's because the three-year-old Summit Series is Sun Valley for the Zynga generation. Instead of golfing with Herb Allen, participants twirl hula hoops and go shark-tagging. And as 1,000 aspiring moguls were preparing to board the 14-deck ship, the Summit dudes were channeling their inner Mayan. It was, after all, "a time of enhanced resonance in the universe," recalls Von Roenn. "When I told this to (co-founder) Brett Leve, he was so psyched."
Unlike most businesses run by twentysomethings, Summit Series was born without irony. Aboard the Celebrity Century, earnestness was bolstered by a banner proclaiming "Make No Small Plans" and a horde of fedora-wearing young adults drinking champagne. "It's easy to judge people," says Leve, 26, whose duties include "curating" a guest list of people willing to spend about $3,500 for a cruise. "I first ask: Is this person positively disrupting their industry? And if they didn't have their company, their fame, influence, and money, would I still be interested in them?"
Not everyone makes the grade. "If you've made some app that just draws kids in and makes money, that's a bit useless," says 25-year-old Elliott Bisnow, who originally came up with the Summit idea. What about the creators of Angry Birds? "I would invite them because they have so much influence," confesses Bisnow. "We would hope that ..." Leve finishes his sentence: "We would hope that they would pivot and do something positive." And if any such business can't, the Summit dudes are happy to help. "It's easy to have a frank conversation and tell them their business model isn't where it should be, their attitude isn't where it should be," says Bisnow.

After Leve joined him later that year, Bisnow proposed a gathering in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. "I thought it was shady," recalls Ferriss. "But a few friends went (to Utah) as sacrificial lambs. They said it was O.K. So I went." The $100,000 trip drew 65 attendees and several sponsors, including Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS - News), which sent someone from its wealth management group. Bisnow and Leve lost $30,000 but learned an important lesson. To succeed, Summit couldn't just bring people together to help themselves. It needed a twist. So, says Bisnow, "We added benevolence."
The emphasis on do-gooder business networking led to an invitation to the Obama White House in 2009 to discuss the economic recovery.
