Cimex K9 would like to introduce Kohl (a Dutch Shepherd), Ross (a Labrador Shepherd mix), Isis (a Catahoula mix) and Olivia (an Australian Kelpie) Arizona's best option for bedbug inspections. Each one of these dogs has been hand-picked for this special field of detection. It often takes evaluating 100-200 rescue dogs before one is selected for this line of duty. Most people believe the intelligence of the dog is the primary factor in choosing a detection dog. Of course a bit of intelligence does help, but more important is the intensity these dogs have toward their reward. Cimex K9's dogs are all rewarded with toys while working. Toy reward dogs are extremely focused and determined to get their toy. When the toy comes out from the handler's pocket it is as if the entire world shuts down for the dog and all they can focus on is that toy. It is almost like an unhealthy obsession in the human world.
Another extremely important factor in the selection of our detection dogs is how the dogs behave in public with the various distractions. Our dogs are dogs are primarily trained to work off-leash with the guidance of their handler. There are cases when leashed are necessary, however in either case the dog is always under total control as obedience is a very important part of the operation. The more the human can stay out of the dog's way the better, after all the whole reason we are using the dog is that they are the natural expert hunters.
Initial training can take several months, but the training never stops and having a trainer on staff providing quality control is what we believe sets our program apart from others.
The K-9 and the handler are a team and work together to make sure the customer is receiving the most accurate inspection possible. Often the dog will quickly find bedbugs or evidence of bedbugs in a room in a matter of seconds as there is plenty of odor available for the dog to detect immediately. Other times a very light infestation will require much more intense detailing of the common hot spots and furniture to ensure an accurate inspection. This combination along with visual verification is by far the best option possible in today's battle against these persistent bedbugs.
All of our dogs live a normal pet dog style of life when they are off duty. They know when it is work time and when it is off-duty time. Work is really a human term in this case as all of the detection dogs would much rather be on the job than at home relaxing. They live for this and absolutely love it. There is never a time that a dog is pushed or forced to do anything. We simply encourage their natural behaviors and adapted it into a game for them which just happens to be helping out humanity in the process. The dogs live with families in wonderful loving homes with other dogs as well.
One of the most rewarding things about working with these dogs is knowing that they were saved from the shelter and more than likely destruction. These high drive dogs do not make good pets and are usually dropped off at the shelter because their energy can't be channeled into something positive which leads to destructive behaviors. Fortunately we have given these dogs an outlet for this energy and it is helping us humans against the dreaded bedbug!
