Muffat held off American Allison Schmitt to take gold in an a new Olympic record time of 4m 01.45secs with a huge roar greeting British hope and defending champion Rebecca Adlington winning the bronze medal.

1920 GMT: South African Cameron van der Burgh smashed the world record in winning the men's 100m breaststroke final. He won in 58.46 secs, beating Australian Christian Sprenger and American veteran Brendan Hansen.

The Spanish team had plenty of NBA talent to draw from, including Los Angeles Lakers NBA star Pau Gasol who scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Evans, world champion in 2009 and yellow jersey winner in 2011, endured a torrid campaign on the recent Tour de France finishing well behind British champion Bradley Wiggins.

The 32-year-old went one better than last time out in Beijing as she beat Cuba's Yanet Bermoy in the final with a counter-attack in the sudden-death golden score period.

1523 GMT: BRITAIN: While it was good news for Britain in the cycling, the British team also had some sad news today. Veteran British marathon runer Paula Radcliffe withdrew from the Games with a foot injury.
After much speculation the 38-year-old world record holder, who has never won an Olympic medal, would pull out, she confirms it with this statement: "From the day when it was announced that London had won the bid, taking part and performing well in the London Olympic Games has been a major goal in my life."

1315 GMT: The JUDO looks to have briefly descended into farce over at the ExCel arena -- a qaurter-final between world champion Masashi Ebinuma and Cho Jun-Ho of South Korea resulted in Cho being awarded victory, only for his rival to be declared the winner moments later.
The fight was level after a five-minute contest plus an extra three minutes of golden score, meaning it went to a judges' decision. All three judges awarded the bout to Cho, but the International Judo Federation's Refeering Commission then intervened.
Following frantic discussions on the sidelines, referees director Juan Carlos Barcos called the judges over and told them to change their minds which they duly did -- lifting white instead of blue flags to denote an Ebunima win.

1254 GMT: A mysterious woman who gatecrashed India's athletes' march at the opening ceremony was an "overexcited" cast member, says Games chief Sebastian Coe.
The woman, in a red top, appeared delighted to be walking next to the flag-bearer on Friday night but India demanded an explanation for her presence.
Coe has told reporters he would speak to the Indian team about the embarrassing incident.
But he said the woman, reportedly a student from Bangalore, was one of 7,500 volunteers taking part in the opening ceremony, and was unlikely to pose a risk to security.
"She was a cast member. Clearly she got slightly overexcited," said Coe.
"I will be speaking to the Indian delegation about it... She couldn't have got in to the opening ceremony without having gone through all our security protocols," he added.

New Zealand rode on an early goal from Cathryn Finlayson in the Group B match to score their maiden victory in Olympic Games against their Oceanic rivals.
It's the first time the Black Sticks have taken even a point off Australia in the Olympics.
Defending champions the Netherlands meanwhile started their campaign with a sound 3-0 win over hard-working Belgium in Group A.
1127: TENNIS: Play was delayed earlier at Wimbledon as the Centre Court roof was closed after a hailstorm lashed the All England Club, but has now started to get underway.
Hail and heavy rain briefly poured down just as play was about to start on the outside courts.
The storm didn't last long, but was enough to persuade organisers to use the Centre Court roof, which saw regular action during the recent rain-hit Wimbledon, for the first time in the Olympics.
Play on Centre Court was only held up by around 10 minutes as this year's beaten Wimbledon finalist Agnieszka Radwanska and Germany's Julia Goerges emerged just after the scheduled midday start on the main show court.

"When I started judo my parents said it was a sport for men. My whole life I've liked challenges," said Menezes.
"The truth is the major problem was my studies so I came to an agreement with them. In order to continue in the sport I had to do well in my studies."
Her parents eventually came round to her sporting interest, she said. Presumably Saturday's gold set the seal on their approval.

Biden: Romney doesn't see value in education
DETROIT (AP) ? Vice President Joe Biden, in a speech Sunday to the nation's second largest teachers unions, said Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney doesn't treat public education as a priority and distrusts the hardworking teachers who struggle to create opportunity for the nation's young people.
Biden addressed 2,500 delegates at the American Federation of Teachers national convention in Detroit on Sunday.
Biden painted Romney as planning to gut education funding to finance tax breaks for the wealthy.
From what Romney and his GOP rivals said during the primary debates, "it looks like they don't think public education is worth the investment," Biden said.
A spokesman for Romney's campaign accused Biden ? and President Barack Obama ? of kowtowing to teachers unions. "Instead of putting students first, this administration has put the union bosses that fund their political campaigns ahead of what's best for our children," said spokesman Sean Fitzpatrick.
"Mitt Romney has the plan and record to put students first and make sure that they have a job waiting for them when they graduate," Fitzpatrick said.
Overall, Biden told the teachers, the GOP has made a significant move to the right. "This is not your father's Republican Party," he said. "I am not questioning their motives, but I am questioning their judgment."
Biden said Romney backs Republican budget plans to slash spending on the Head Start preschool program, as well as grants and loans for college students.
The AFT represents 1.5 million teachers, second in membership to the 3.2 million-member National Education Association.

Report: Doctor treating Holmes had medical reprimand

The psychiatrist who James Eagan Holmes' lawyers say was treating the Colorado theater shooting suspect was reprimanded in February 2005 by a state medical board, a Denver television station reported on its website.
According to documents that thedenverchannel.com said it had obtained, Dr. Lynne Fenton was reprimanded for prescribing medication, including Vicodin, Xanax, Lorazepam and Ambien, to herself, her husband and an employee.
The final order by the State Board of Medical Examiners said the prescriptions were made on several occasions between 1997 and 1999. According to the order, the incidents came to light in an investigation after Fenton told the Drug Enforcement Administration that a former employee was fraudulently attempting to fill prescriptions.
Fenton is an assistant professor at the University of Colorado's Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora and medical director of the campus Student Mental Health Service. The report by thedenverchannel.com said her biographical material was removed from the university's website on Friday.
According to the board's order, Fenton:
- Prescribed Claritin to herself and her husband. At the time, it was a prescription drug; now it is sold over the counter.
- Prescribed Lorazepam and Vicodin for an employee suffering chronic headaches and anxiety.
- Provided four Xanax tablets to an employee for anxiety over an airline flight.
- Took three Xanax tablets during her mother's terminal illness.
- Prescribed Ambien to her husband for insomnia.
- Did not maintain medical charts for the prescriptions.
The order said Fenton completed remedial training and received an official admonition.

Fenton was named in court records as the psychiatrist that Holmes was seeing before the shooting rampage in a Colorado movie theater that killed 12 people and wounded dozens of others.
The disclosure came Friday in a motion?seeking a hearing on what Holmes' lawyers called inappropriate leaks to the news media. The hearing is scheduled for?Monday.

The motion noted media reports this week that Holmes had sent a "package" to a psychiatrist at the University of Colorado-Denver medical school, where he was a first-year graduate student studying neuroscience and psychiatric disorders.
Holmes' court-appointed attorneys disclosed that the package contained?a notebook and they argued that because it was a communication with Fenton, its contents should be protected from release under Colorado doctor-patient confidentiality laws.?

LONDON (Reuters) - Miner Anglo American saw profits drop almost 40 percent in the first half of the year as faltering global economic growth hit the prices of key commodities like iron ore and platinum, but failed to bring down costs.
The trend of weaker prices and still-rising costs has battered the major miners that have reported so far, including Brazil's Vale which posted its worst earnings in two years when it reported second-quarter results earlier this week.
Anglo, the first UK-listed mining major to report first-half earnings, came in below expectations with a 38 percent drop in operating profit to $3.7 billion, below a company-compiled consensus forecast of $4 billion.
Underlying earnings per share came in at $1.38, almost half the level for the same period last year and again below expectations.
Anglo units Kumba Iron Ore, Amplats and De Beers have all reported a weak first half. Kumba, which Anglo regards as one of its most promising assets, saw profits drop 18 percent, while Anglo's share of De Beers profits fell over 40 percent and earnings at the platinum unit were down almost 80 percent.
Anglo, facing challenges in its efforts to secure licences, has also been forced to delay the shipment of first ore from its key Minas Rio iron ore project in Brazil to the second half of 2014.

CIA, FBI beefs up security for Olympics
As the London Olympics gets under way, the director of the National Counterterrorism Center said Wednesday that U.S. intelligence agencies had established a "threat integration center" with British security officials to analyze threats.
"For the past two years, NCTC, in coordination with our intelligence community and British partners, has been leading the U.S. effort to make sure that we are collecting and analyzing and sharing all potential threat information relating to the Olympics and that we are in a position to respond quickly to prevent any possible plotting tied to the games," Matthew Olsen, director of the NCTC, testified Wednesday before the House Homeland Security Committee.
"In particular, NCTC, with our intelligence community partners, established a Threat Integration Center, designed to operate around the clock providing real-time situational awareness and threat analysis," Olsen said in his prepared testimony.
The threat analysis center will be staffed by officials from the CIA, NCTC and the FBI as well as other U.S. intelligence services to review threat information and quickly share it with British Security officials from Scotland Yard, MI-5 and MI-6.
According to officials, the threat integration center, which is housed at the U.S. Embassy in London became fully operational on Wednesday. Spokespeople from the CIA and FBI declined to specifically address how many employees and agents they have in the United Kingdom assisting with the Olympic security effort, but two sources said the FBI had a contingent of about 50 employees and agents working in the United Kingdom.
"And we are, as part of our routine and ongoing and longstanding coordination with our close ally, we'll have some liaison personnel that will be in country during the Olympic Games. They won't directly be providing security. That's what the U.K. authorities will be doing. But they'll be providing some routine liaison capability," Patrick Ventrell said at a July 17, 2012, State Department Briefing.
Along with the contingent of U.S. intelligence officials looking for terrorist threat information, there will also be a contingent of security officers from Diplomatic Security and the U.S. Secret Service on hand to guard athletes and dignitaries as the games get under way.

The Faculty Lounge: Teaching Legal History
I want to build on Al?s previous post on legal history and bring the discussion into the classroom.
Last semester I taught a legal history seminar that I designed myself entitled History and Analysis of the Equal Protection Clause. And judging by my student evaluations, the students really enjoyed both me and the class. But one problem that I noticed was getting my students to discuss legal history on its own merits. That is to say, students did not seem much interested in what Al terms pure legal history. On the other hand, students were very open to discussing applied legal history.
Here?s what I mean. Students read pieces concerning the 39th Congress and the drafting of the Fourteenth Amendment. When the discussion was focused on what ?equal protection? meant in the 1860s with no connection to present-day controversies, class discussion was less lively. But, when the discussion was focused on what the ratifying generation's original understanding of ?equal protection? means for gender discrimination today, class discussion bustled.
It would be interesting if other professors have similar findings.
