Learn to Better Manage Your COPD Symptoms

COPD is the third cause of death in the United States after Heart Disease and Cancer. Once a diagnosis of ?Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease ?COPD? is received, many life changes can be anticipated.

The debilitating aspects of this disease will affect many areas of the person?s life and that of their family over time. COPD causes limitations of activities, whether work or social. As a degenerative disease, COPD will worsen but it is a manageable condition, especially if the person with COPD takes care of themselves moving forward.

The Following Tips of Things To Do Can Help Someone With COPD Feel Better and Enjoy a Better Quality of Life:

*Encourage a Basic Exercise Program ? Check with your doctor to see what type of exercise and time frame is right for you. People tend to feel better and maintain their strength longer with regular exercise. You may want to join them in their routine.

*Avoid wearing perfumes, beauty products, hair products or lotions with strong scents. These aromas can further irritate airways or worsen other symptoms.

*Use non-toxic or natural cleaning products in their home. Fumes from cleaning materials can trigger symptoms. When cleaning, open the windows for some fresh air.

*Ventilate the home frequently. Indoor air can be more problematic than fresh air.

*Having a fan or air conditioner blowing on you may help you to breathe easier. When visiting, wear a sweater rather than turning off the extra air flow.

*If you or your loved one smokes ? find a method to quit. Smoking is particularly harmful to someone who has trouble breathing. If the person eventually goes on Oxygen to help breathe, then smoking is a huge risk for a fire or explosion. Get them into a ?Quit Smoking? program. Don?t smoke around them. Remove all smoking materials and paraphernalia. Give them gum or sucking candies. Try to distract them when the urge to smoke arises.? Smoking and COPD do not mix.

*Emergency care or hospitalizations can be common when COPD symptoms are exacerbated. Shortness of breath or coughing can indicate an episode which will need immediate attention. Adhere to the other TIPS on this list to minimize symptom triggers. If an episode occurs, know who to call, which doctor, which ER to go to.

*Eat healthy ? begin with snacks and then to complete meals. Gradually build in fruits and vegetables into their diet. Gradually subtract some of the unhealthy, sugary and salty foods. A well- balanced diet is especially important to someone whose health is already compromised. Proper nutrition leads to more energy, folks with COPD need more energy just to do the day to day things of personal care and maintaining a home. Consult your doctor, a nutritionist or dietician for a personalized diet.

*On the subject of energy, learn ways to help conserve the limited energy you or your family member has. COPD will drain your energy level. Look around your home and organize things in a way which require less energy to use or are used daily in the same room. Use a chair in the shower. Keep the things you use often, within arm?s reach ? no need to put them away or out of reach. Make a conscious effort to conserve your energy.

*Consider hiring a caregiver a few days a week to help with household chores and if need be, personal care for safety.

*Get educated about COPD, find a support group or COPD organization nearby. Get pamphlets and give them to your friends and family so they will learn the facts of COPD rather than the myths.
