Pop star 50 Cent announces that he is authoring a new semi-autobiographical novel aimed at promoting anti-bullying.Playground is slated to release in 2012 from Penguin Young Readers Group.
The emcee has already released? From Pieces to Weight (which got shaky reviews, at best), and self-help-to-success guide? The 50th Law coauthored by Robert Greene.
Bullying is on everybody?s mind these days ? we hear about it in the news, in the classrooms, and in the home. The pop star, who?s violent and drug-ridden childhood has been the focus of much media attention in the past, tells his story as an effort to understand why kids bully. The book?s intended audience is young adults, but in its path to understanding how kids and teens become bullies, it could come to offer a lot more insight for parents, educators, and policy makers. With a voice like Fif?s speaking out against bullying ? a history of drug dealing and violence, wild success, and pop stardom ? maybe teenagers will take serious issue with what the nation is referring to as an ?epidemic?. Fif?s experiences and research could unearth quite a bit. But if 50 Cent is just capitalizing off of the prevalence of bullying in the media, his message will fail to translate into the hearts of the teens he aims to reach.
Until?Playground hits shelves, we?ll just have to wonder.
