Vancouver Canucks defenseman Aaron Rome says he doesn?t regret making the hit against Boston Bruins forward Nathan Horton that got him suspended for the remainder of the Stanley Cup finals, even though he is sorry Horton got hurt.
?It?s a split-second decision,? Rome told ESPN. ?There?s no intent to hurt anybody. If I could go back, obviously you don?t want anybody to get hurt, but I don?t think I?d change the decision.?
Horton?is unable to play in the?rest of the series due to a concussion he suffered?on the play.?Horton was knocked out and removed from the building on a stretcher. Following the hit, the Bruins won games 3 and 4 of the series.
According to Jim Jamieson of The (British Columbia) Province, Rome?s suspension is the only suspension longer than one game in the history of the Stanley Cup finals. Jamieson also reports that the extended suspension was a surprise to many given Rome?s history as a clean player.
