A CORRECTIONS officer in the US has been charged with bigamy after his first wife discovered bride No.2 while on Facebook.

Alan O'Neill's two spouses were introduced to one another when the social networking site recommended they become "friends", according to The News Tribune in Tacoma, Washington.

The first wife grew suspicious because the prospective?friend had a profile photo of herself and Mr O'Neill posing beside a wedding cake.

She called Mr O'Neill's mother to inquire about the mystery woman and the alleged deception soon unraveled.

It turns out that while he wasn't in a relationship with both women simultaneously,?O'Neill was still married to the first when he wed the second, The News Tribune said.

An hour after the call to his mum, Mr O'Neill reportedly showed up at his first wife's apartment, begging her not to tell anyone because he would soon fix the situation.

He instead was charged with bigamy after she alerted authorities.

"It's not the crime of the century, but it is a crime," prosecutor Mark Lindquist told The News Tribune.

Mr O'Neill, 41, has been placed on unpaid administrative leave from his job and is scheduled to appear in court on March 22 to answer his felony charge.

Mr O'Neill, who was previously known as Alan Fulk, married his first wife in 2001. The couple split up in 2009 but did not obtain a divorce, court records showed.

He formally changed his last name to O'Neill in December and allegedly married his second wife later that month without the knowledge of his first spouse.

He faces a maximum of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine in convicted.
